In "King Creole" Carolyn Jones gives a performance that rivals the best acting of Bettie Davis. Her acting is overshadowed because Elvis Presley gives his best performance in a movie and is in just about every scene, while Jones' character is only one of two love interests. However, in every one of her nine or ten scenes she is riveting. Her sexual interplay with Elvis recalls the best scenes of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
Nobody took Elvis seriously as an actor at this time, so the fact that he did a performance worthy of James Dean in this movie was really amazing. I think that was what critics and audiences concentrated on at the time. However, without Carolyn Jones' brooding and brilliant performance, the story wouldn't have worked.
Best lines:
Presley: How did you get into this?
Jones: How do I get out?
Jones (watching her sleeping pimp): I keep looking at his chest and hoping. But the pig keeps right on breathing.
I know it is a little late as the film was made 52 years ago, but I think we should write the Academy Awards and demand that she be given an academy award which she deserved for this movie. -

Only good part?
I think Walter Matheau was good and Elvis gave not only his best performance, but a mighty fine performance in this.
As for the award, it went to Susan Hayward for I Want to Live that year I think an argument could be made for Carolyn. At least a nomination.
