OMG. The OP has made an observation I have been dying to say.
Paula Patton, Halle Berry, Lauren London are all considered 'black' actresses and they fully accept that, and it's nothing wrong with embracing that, yet actresses like Maya Rudolph and Miss Rashida Jones have some type of pass and I have never remotely heard any of them referring themselves as 'black' actress. It's nothing wrong with that but back in the day Rashida would just been black because Lena Horne to me can pass but she still considers herself black, Vanity, Jayne Kennedy and even Vanessa Williams (who I know isn't
        directly
biracial, but looks it) were still black. Jennifer Beals doesn't consider herself a black actress though
Mariah Carey is probably hands down the most racially ambiguous looking person but she still considers herself black only being 1/4th of it.

Jayne Kennedy has two blacda0k parents. She is not biracial.

I know that and Lena Horne looks more racially ambiguous than anyone but she was still black.

Basically it all comes down to which features you have the most.

Stereotypes are not as evil as people like to think. It's really just math. When a person judges someone solely on it, is when it becomes a problem.
Also if the OP main point wasnt calling pple racist , i dont see the point of asking this question. Anyone one can figure out it would depend if your were on the lighter or darker side.

I have medium toned skin - about the same as Rashida's sister, Kikada - and I grew up amongst very pale English people. I was constantly expected to explain my heritage, which I always took to mean, "Please explain the colour of your skin." By the same token, if I'd grown up amongst West Indian English people, the situation probably would have been much the same. And despite that, I see people like Rashida and think, "I wonder where she's from," because the media shows me mostly pale-skinned, straight-haired, thin-lipped, round-eyed people. When that's what you're used to seeing (even if you don't fit into that mold yourself), you wonder about people who look different. It's happened to me and I didn't like it, and - regretfully - I do it to other people. It probably comes under the heading of "human nature".

The reason Rashida Jones is call mixed or biracial, instead of black isyou NEVER see her playing any role in Hollywood as a black womannot ONCEEVER!!!
She's always playing roles where she can easily been seen, or portrayed as a "white" woman. Whereas, the actresses you mentioned before, have all played roles as a black women.
Maybe she's not comfortable with portraying herself as black in Hollywood, because of stereotyping. Who knows? Nobody but Rashida.

She isn't cast into "Black" roles because she doesn't look Black. How many Black people have you seen that look like her? Few to none. She does have some "ethnic" influence to her looks though. She makes a more convincing Latina than Black. If she played a bi-racial role (which she is), it would be believable. But she wouldn't play a convincing 100% or mostly Black woman (aside from those of Creole origin of which some do possess European features) unless they went Cloud Atlas on her with the prosthetics and caked on the makeup.

I agree with the people who say that it really is what they look at you at first glance that you will be perceived as. Most of the population will agree that Rashida Jones looks more White than Black (although if you look closely, you definitely can see some African influence in her looks). She actually can pass for a Latina when she is more tan.
Obama, Halle Berry, Paula Patton, are the opposite. They look Black at first glance, then you start seeing that their faces do have certain European characteristics.
I am half-Asian and most White people will view me as Asian, while Asians will view me as White because that is what I look like to them when compared to the general population of their own race.
Also, I think Rashida is never really casted into "Black" roles because, again she looks more White (or even Latina) in the first place. N2000o one will really believe she is Black in "Black" roles. She would have to play a mixed-raced woman like she is or White.

Lady Anna, the truth is.that every member of.the human race arose from the same African origins. Unfortunately when humans spread out over the globe we evolved various adaptations to local conditions which some people began to.think made them superior. There's no logical reason for it. We all bleed red.
I grew up in the South during segregation. I remember separate bathrooms and drinking fountains. They were not equal and I pointed that out as a child because I found it unfair. They told me to hush up. It was wrong and I did what I could to change things by voting progressive all my life.
People have to make their own decisions as to where they belong, but we are all human beings. Why can't we belong together? That is our shared race. Everything else is cosmetic difference.

the goverment considers a person with "one drop black blood" as black. The goverment does it for stats, Hollywood do it just to say they are not racist.
