Of course I should go with Flash Gordon, if it weren't for the fact that another voice was dubbed in for his. For christ's sake! His voice was way more appropriate for the role than the one that was dubbed in for him. But I digress. My vote is, and I think this may be one of the popular choices, the role of Aris Boch in an episode of Stargate SG-1. But since I've only seen half of this guys appearances in film or TV, it would be nice to hear what other fans think.

I really enjoyed him as Aris Boch on Stargate, but I also loved him as The Highwayman and if you've seen the somewhat chee5b4sy 80s movie 'Under The Gun', that really showcases his comedic ability - he was hilarious! Other faves are Jane and the Lost City and My Chauffeur.

I to really liked his show The Highwayman, that was until Jacko showed up, and pretty much runied the show for me with aweful acting and the screching of his lines. As far as your suggestions, I will have to try and find them on VHS, especially Under The Gun.

Are you sure about this, axton? That his voice was dubbed?
I've got a pretty good ear for voices, and it sure sounded like his real one to me.
You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment. -

I dunno, crazyaxton. I've only heard his real voice in other roles he's played, and unless he was dubbed in those too, I'm personally betting it was the same voice. (Same timbre, same tonal inflections.) Just last night I watched his guest role in "Stargate SG-1", which is what prompted me to come here, seeking information about his career since "Flash". And I would swear it was the same voice, albeit with 30 years' difference between the two, in those two performances. (OK, and also allowing for the fact that he was clearly encouraged to act over-the-top in making Flash enthusiastic7ec about everything.)
I've read elsewhere, since posting my question to you, that because so much of the dialogue in "Flash Gordon" was synched in post-production (by everyone, not just Sam Jones), and in the finished release some of his dialogue doesn't synchronise precisely with his lip movements on-screen, that an urban myth sprang up about his role being dubbed by someone else. But that it's a rumour not based on fact.
I obviously don't know what the truth to all this is. But if his role was dubbed by a voice actor, shouldn't that actor be getting a credit somewhere? On the soundtrack album of the film, which incorporates snippets of dialogue from the film, it's Sam J Jones who gets credited as being "Flash".

Well, it's on record, that his voice was dubbed for the Flash Gordon film. After seeing (hearing) him in "The Spirit", "The Highwayman", "1st and 10"(season 2), I really do belive that Sam's voice was over dubbed by someone else for the Flash Gordon film.

The truth of it, axton, is he was only partly dubbed. Some of the dialogue is his own voice indeed, just redone in post production by himself and the rest was 'smoothed out' by a voice actor when his own deeper inflections rose to notice too much. Some of his dialogue in the film is completely untouched, some is completely redone by the other guy. Apparently, and I don't know if this is true, the rumour from the set was that the director Mike Hodges had a problem with Sam Jones (due to Hodge's wife being rather enamoured of him) and the redubbing was more of a snub just for the sake of it than it was a necessity due to his voice. It's about the only nasty gossip I ever heard came from the FG set and agin, whether it's true or not I don't know. I'd love to hear Brian Blessed do a long interview about his expereinces on that movie, we'd sure hear the definative truth then!

Well Hazzard, knowing you from the Flash Gordon postings, I gather that you know all your stuff about the 1980 Flash Gordon film, at least all there is to know. My VHS version died a heroic death last fall, so I will upgrade to the new DVD version that came out over a year ago. Perhaps then I will hear some of that gruffness of Sam Jones voice in the role of Flash.

Ah, but you barely will, that's the point. Whatever the reasons for the redubs and the replacement dubs, you don't hear any gruffness - but then remember, his voice has gotten 'gruffer' as he aged, he didn't sound like Aris Boch so much when he played Flash - and when his voice did 'gruff out' on the FG shoot, that's where they replaced or got him to overdub. Listen to his voice when you get the dvd - I recommend the UK region 2 silver anniversary edition with the Brian Blessed commentary if you have a multi region player - if you listen carefully, you can hear his voice change sometimes from scene to scene where it changes from his spoken words at the time of shooting, to his own overdubs, to the replacement guy. They did a pretty good job all told.

'his voice has gotten 'gruffer'as he aged"
Gonna have to disagree with you on that one. I just recently watched season two of "1st and 10", where Sam played Johnny Valentine, QB for the Bulls of the NAFL. My point being, this was in '85 for an HBO series, only 5 years after Flash Gordon. His voice was right on par for what he even sounds like now, as witnessed in the turd version of the '07 version of Flash Gordon. Being that this audio is only five years after what he voiced in the 1980 film version, I stand my ground to the fact that it was a wrong to overdub this mans voice. It was in and of itself, quite heroic sounding, and that the people who made the movie, should have stayed with his original sounding voice. -

Axton, try finding a copy of his appearances on TV in the 70's, or listen to him in 10. His voice may not have changed drastically, but it has gotten 'gruffer' over time.
