I too, agree. I loved the way she put Lloyd Bridges (Harvey) in his place. Straight to the point, no beating around the bush I thought she was more gutsy than Grace Kelly in the film, however, it was Grace Kelly who stayed until the bitter end. Don't blame Katy's character though, she'd had enough of that town

I love Grace Kelly, I mean the womans beautiful. But I do agree that Jurado had a real presence. She struck me from the very start, not only with her unique beauty, but just with her acting ability. Therefore it was no surprise for me when I came to IMDB to see that she had been in so many movies.
The other thing, remember when considering her character and why she didn't stay that she said she was leaving B/C no one was sticking with Will Kane, and because without him the city would be dead.

Katy had a higher performance in "High Noon", Grace Kelly looks distant, cold, reticentnothing compared with that heavy and deep presence of Katy.

i agree with all of the positive comments. i noticed katy and was attracted to her presence instantly, whereas i was almost annoyed by grace.

One thing to point out is that Katy's character was written much better than Grace's. A better comparison would be to compare them in their better roles. Nothing against Katy thought. This was a wonderful performance.

Katy's delivery of her lines in High Noon was more remarkable given that English is not her first language.
"You're a good looking boy, you have big broad shoulders, but he is a man. It takes more than big broad shoulders to make a man, Harvey, and you have a long way to go. You know something? I don't think you will ever make it."
                      Wow. What a put down.

Katy Jurado is just outstanding in this role. Everybody is acting well in the film, but only Gary Cooper and her are intense and memorable.

It's an amazing performance. She takes what is essentially a stock role and makes her the smartest, most perceptive person in the movie.

I agree. Katy Jurado was an excellent actress, and in High Noon she had an opportunity to show her talent. She was unparalleled in playing strong, brave, tough women. She fills her lines with deep emotion. Katy was also gorgeous; look at her eyes and lips! However, let me say that also Grace Kelly gave a great performance, playing a completely different character. The face-to-face between Katy and Grace is one of the highlights of that wonderful classic movie. Let me conclude remarking that Katy does not abandon Kane. Within her deep core, she knows that the marshal will survive, and goes away, sacrificing herself for the man she loves, since she thinks that the little Quaker is the right woman for Kane (I'm not that sure, though). Ciao from Italy Paolo

Jurado also didn't lose her presence after her sex appeal went. Can you imagine a middle-aged Grace Kelly, forty pounds heavier and wielding pistols, holding her own in a film like ONE-EYED JACK? I can't even see her teaching her daughter how to drive.
Thing is that I have nothing against Grace, but this was her first "majo5b4r" production, and it kind of shows. She had been in Hollywood before, but hadn't worked with the likes of Cooper and Zinneman, and you get the sense she's intimidated. She does fine considering who she's working with, but it's nothing remarkable, and she definitely hasn't reached her full form, yet.
She really required the likes of someone like Alfred Hitchcock to breed her into the type of "starlet" whose physical control and screen presence dominated the room, as in TO CATCH A THIEF. In HIGH NOON, its definitely clear that she hasn't come into her own yet. Kelly is good, but the performance is interchangeable - Amy very well could have been portrayed by Cooper's old squeeze Patricia Neale (arguably more effectively). Likewise, I can't see anyone other than Jurado playing Helen Ramirez. Maybe Dolores Del Rio, but even that's a stretch.
It might have been the demands for the character that Amy appear awkward. She is, after all, a young Quaker woman in a very tense situation. Still, just look at how Helen brushes Harvey's cheek in their first scene as Will and Amy are seen riding away, as if to imply they had just finished being intimate with each other (to be frank). You just don't get those type of spontaneous moments from Kelly, honestly.

I saw "High Noon" when it came out in 1952. I was 9 years old, but I still remember her performance. Grace Kelly was such a wimp beside her.
