people hate him because hes a dick to buffy and he used her for sex and he picked up another chick in front of her and he broke her heart. does that sum it up? i like the actor though just not his character.

Nah, it would've been too easy. I bet when his character was first created they planned on making him Buffy's main love interest, but I'm sure that later on they realized that the BtVS fans needed time to mourn Angel leaving. I agree he did seem like he had a ton of potential and I was pretty blind-sided when he turned into a butthead.

He never magically turned into a dick, it wasn't a change in his character. He was always a wanker, one of those guys who sleep with women and then dump them. Now there's nothing really wrong with one-night stands as long as both understand what it is, but he got women into his bed through lies and manipulation. Kaufman was fantastic in the role, even I was fooled by his act, and I'm a straight male.

I didn't like Parkerit was pretty obvious from the beginning that he was going to be a dick. But the character has no relation to my feelings for the actor. He did a good job portraying the full of himself moron that slept with women like they were nothing. He never liked her, and I don't think Joss ever intended for the relationship to be anything more than just the 'stupid mistake' Buffy made when she started school.
People always say they never liked Riley. I honestly liked Riley to start with because he was just what Buffy needed, a good guy who loved her and wanted to take care of her. He only had a rough time when he quit being all drugged up from The Initiative, because he wasn't close to being as strong as Buffy anymore. And REALLY he didn't turn out to be a jerk, he just wanted Buffy to make a commitment that she didn't realize she was ready to make until Xander talked to her, which ended up being too late. Buffy really did love him, and he was pretty g5b4ood for her EXCEPT that he was with the Initiative, and went back to them, and the whole letting vampires drink off you to get off thing.
AND NO MATTER WHAT, NO ONE COULD EVER EVER EVER REPLACE ANGEL FOR HER. Not even Spike who ended up being totally in love with her. -

I pretty much agree with everything you said. Although I don't know if Spike was ever going to replace Angel. I think he was something different for Buffy and she has a different kind of love for him than she does for Angel or for Riley.
And I think Adam did a great job in the role. It's just that the guy he played was a total douchebag. -

parker could never replace angel, scott could never replace angel, spike could never replace angel, riley could never replace angel. first love first of all, angel was also her perfect protector, until angelus appearedbut who knew? this maybe the best storyline i've ever seen on tv, or the movies for that matter. a love she could never have yet a love that couldn't be forgotten. i personnally believe that "buffy" is one of most tragegic characters in tv history; why do you think they have actual college courses on "buffy"? btw, park was a total ass. joss is fanastic, i hope dollhouse is as good. the last few seasons of " buffy" were so so, i think mainly because joss had too many projects going, firefly was sort of dismal, angel still rocked and should have had at least one more seasoni'm done

Kauffman was great in the role. Parker was a great character because of how badly he treated Buffy, how that effected her, and how well Kauffman played it all. Of course, great characters aren't always great people. Parker was a horrible a-hole and that's why he's a great character!
And, not only do I love Riley he's one of my favorite characters in the series. I like him more than Angel, for example. And, yeah, Riley was just what Buffy needed at that time almost. His fatal flaw, as a boyfriend for Buffy, was his insecurity over Buffy's superior power. Like many men with women, they're threatened when those women are more powerful or capable than them. Riley was a great guy with one big utlimately fatal flaw he just couldn't get over.
Sure, Buffy contributed to the unwinding of what could've been, in a slightly but significantly different world, a great relationship, with her inability to commit. And, interestingly, part of why she couldn't commit was because Riley was just "normal." So Buffy was effed up about her being more powerful than Riley, too.
But, ultimately, it was Riley's insecurity over Buffy's superior power that doomed their relationship. Not meant to be with her for long, but a great character, nonetheless and Blucas was terrific, and beautiful to look at, in the role, too.

AND NO MATTER WHAT, NO ONE COULD EVER EVER EVER REPLACE ANGEL FOR HER.
As a ridiculously over-the-top teenage infatuation with the guy she never even really knew? I agree. Thing is, most people grow out of that and learn what real love is.
Actually, I liked Buffy/Angel in the early seasons, before Entertainment Weekly and fandom started hyping it as "forever love", "soulmates" and all that crap that grownups should be embarrassed to even utter. It was a first love, great teenage love, when you're full of romantic idealism and you think that you'll only love one person in your entire love and that that love will be forever etc. etc. I know it, I've been there at 16 as well. But it was never an ideal romance, their relationship was barely functional at times, and even when I used to ship them, I never thought they were that greatly matched. They barely even knew each other for real, she didn't know a bunch of things about him and he was always being mysterious and that's what drew her, that he was mysterious and that he seemed unattainable. But then her first love became a terrible trauma and she never quite recovered from it, became a lot more emotionally closed down and unwilling to risk her heart. And sticking to the idea that she'll never love anyone like she loved Angel (past tense) was a perfect way to protect herself emotionally. Someone put it well when they said she was "walking around carrying her broken heart as a shield". Since mid-season 4, she never showed any intention of being with Angel again and didn't know what to do with him when he would come back, but she wa111cs not willing or able to open up and allow herself to love with the same intensity again. (With Spike, it happened despite her best efforts not to allow it and to deny it, all the way.)
Parker's role was to push her into that direction even more, because she learned that human guys can break your heart just as much as vampires can. That's why she next went for the guy she saw as "solid", "couldn't cause me pain", trustworthy ("I know him, I trust him" she told Angel) - Riley, the guy she never loved as much as she thought she was supposed to love him because he was a good guy and "normal".
Pain is to pleasure as disco is to punk. You need to live through one to fully appreciate the other. -

I didn't like Parker, he was fine at first but then he just turned out to be a total ass and I think Buffy should have stood up to him for what he did to her, but then it just sent her into an emotional spiral.

Buffy is my favorite show of all time and whoever is mean to Buffy is on my beep list. It's like she is my best friend and I have to defend her.
Lol. I'm not crazy, I know she's not a real person, I just love the show and love her!
Anyways, I didn't like him because he hurt Buffy. It has nothing to do with Angel. It has nothing to do with being the first after angel. I didn't like Angel when he was mean to her either
