Synecdoche actually has a really happy ending. Caden gets to go home and finally see his daughter and says "Daddy is never going to leave again." Then they get ice cream and talk about all the things they missed doing together.

Eternal Sunshine is actually quite hopeful. Being John Malkovich and Synecdoche, New York are horror films. Adaptation. is hilarious I think, it's hard to take any of it seriously after Meryl Streep gushes about wanting to be an ant and how shiny they are.
I think it's films have a special type of dark humour.
Then speak of the devil and the devil appears. -

I know this is an old post but what the Hell:
Adaptation is a fantasy in Charlie' mind, it's not supposed to really be happening, the death of Donald symbolizes the death of the hack part of his writing.
And how is Eternal Sunshine a downer ending? The two lovers end up together.
Also you totally go Being John Malkovitch wrong. John Cusack wanted to be with Keener's character, not Diaz'. It's happy from Keener and Diaz' perspective though, they have a happy life together.
All his endings are happy from some perspectives.
