Talking of course about the 5-live Mayo / Kermode slot.
When it was first announced that the film review slot would be extended, I was really looking forward to it. I always enjoyed the film reviews, thought it was a shame that every week some would seem to get hurried or missed out.
The banter and occasional tangents they would go off on add to the charm, and at the core there's always the interesting discussion of films, current releases and reviews. Wittertainment yes, but the core being film reviews. I occasionally found the shows had a bit of smugness and nepotism about them that I wasn't too keen on E.g. Saying hello to all their celeb chums - why do I care? how does this benefit the listener? Does anyone really enjoy that section of the show? Constantly banging on about Jason Isaacs Listeners qualifications. A lot of cliquey stuff. But, these things were always outweighed by the reviews and the banter.
Since the show has been lengthened however, it seems to me that we're getting a lot more of the witter, but the same amount of reviews.
I'm sure some disagree, but last week's podcast, featuring The Green Room, was a bit of a nadir for me. I didn't make it to the end of the podcast. After what seemed like about 3 hours I hadn't yet heard a single review, but did hear quite a lot of Jason Isaacs telling not-particularly-fascinating anecdotes about The Green Room, and a bunch of in-jokes relating to it.
Were any other films actually released that week? As far as I can tell the only film out was The Green Room
'nuff of the cliquey stuff, get on with the reviews dammit!
Does anyone else get where I'm coming from here? -

The reviews are usually found towards the end of the podcast, with the first part reserved for interviewing/chatting to guests Or just watch his ten minutes on Film 24* it doesn't have the top ten but it sometimes seems that he gets more reviews in than he does on the two hour radio show.

Hi
I know that the reviews are towards the end of the show, I've been listening for about 3 years. My point is that since the show was made longer, the proportion of film reviews to witter seems to have gone down, and I don't like it. -

I posted a thread about the same thing about a month ago (until the admins took it down
)
I agree with pretty much everthing you just said! The qualifications thing was a cute idea four years ago, but it's long outstayed it's wellcome.
I didn't listen to the podcast with Jason Issacs in it, because I knew it would end up meandering with very little substance. The YouTube clip of Simon and Jason hassling Mark for apparently spoiling the end of that Richard Gere Dog Movie, was enough for me. I did listen to last week's podcast and that was okay ; even though the feed cut while Mark was halfway through his (probably just) slating of "The Bounty Hunter".
One thing I've never got about the Podcast, is they often include the news bulletings in between. I remember they often used to cut them out, but over the past year or two they've put them back in. Surely they should be seperate from the main show, if people want to hear them? -

I suspect that the absolute amount of time given to reviews has fallen a bit not just the proportion. I still enjoy the shows but do wish there was more time for reviews, especially of films that I might not hear of otherwise. The hellos have got rather tedious though.

COULD NOT AGREE MORE! YES I AM SHOUTING AND I CARE NOT!
I text or email something every week and they always ignore me as i will not give my qualifications and call them stupid names. Sometimes I admit my witterings are less than polite but that's because they ignore me and those who want to hear about films.
I like him when he reviews, and talks about things like the bbfc, but when it just sounds like mates arguing (yep, it aint cute, fellas) and mutually masturbating, I hate it.
Still, unfortunately, listener figures are all I guess. -

Good idea. In fact I don't think I'd bother with the podcasts unless they did that as I'd fear missing something with all that skipping.
I've omly ever downloaded one podcast as I thought they came with extra stuff. So much for that.
