Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Mark Kermode

    Is now beyond a joke.
Initially it was a silly little in-joke which quickly became tiresome but now the constant discussions of correct grammar has gone too far.
So boring, so pointless, so irrelevant.
On last week's podcast, Simon Mayo read out an email regarding a split infinitive in
    Jane Eyre
and went on and on about it. Nearly 15 minutes passed before they even got to discussing the Top 10.
When will they realise just how overwhelmingly dull and tedious it is?

Totally agree, and it isnt just grammaar, they love to beat other things to death too. I think the two hour show is an over indulgence. Their 40min conversation filler with a guest is equally annoying.

Boyd and Floyd are a welcome break now, as their show is much leaner.

I agree. Needs to tighten up a bit. Not sure Kermode is the problem, Mayo needs to reign in him a bit.
Some of Mayo's interruptions (What happens next then?) are kind of annoying.
        She's a man, it's a sled, he's dead already.

Mayo is ENTIRELY the problem. WE listen to the podcast for 1 thing, Kermode's opinion, NOTHING MORE. Mayo has unashamedly forced himself upon the show's listener-ship with his very own "entire first half of the show interview" section (Also see his "Record of the week" bit as further evidence). This wouldn't be so bad if Mayo EVER conducted anything other than a beep interview or asked a decent question, but he basically panders like crazy at the slightest sniff of Hollywood celebrity and asks questions straight off the PR approved list.
IMO the show should run like..
5 minute intro - whats on the show etc.
5 minute top 10 rundown - 1 sentence re-cap of Kermode's opinion WITH NO LISTENER EMAILS.
10 minutes for interviews - unless its a REALLY good interview or an exceptional guest.
10 minutes for emails - basically satisfying the alarming trend towards forced (and unwelcome) audience involvement.
90 minutes for reviews - the show would BE vastly improved by dedicating at least 3/4 of the running time to actual reviews, and a minimum of at least 10 minutes of the film of the week.
This show used to be a genuine high point of my viewing/listening week, but now, in it's current (and somewhat sorry) state, I NEVER listen live anymore (as I can't skip the beep bits) only listen to the (2nd half of the) podcast as background noise.
I guess the old hipster adage is really true.. "nothing is any good, if other people like it".
          Rant over.

I was beginning to think that the reader's emails are so dull because of Mayo's delivery, but listening live right now to Colin Paterson (joined by Boyd and Floyd) and the reader's emails are just as tedious.
