I think the best of her solo albums is 1982's 'Chaka Khan', it's a real winner, especially the be-bop medly. And guess what? It's the only one of her albums not to have come out on CD (except in Japan).

I saw that CD at a used record store a week ago. Was going to buy it. Can't believe I didn't.

Man that's a shame, as of this writing there was one on Amazon.com going used for over $250. Thank God I had it burned to CD from my vinyl copy!

Funny that that album won a grammy in 1983 (or maybe 2?) but its the only one that isn't on cd. That record's hit single, her cover of Michael Jackson's Gotta Be There runs rings around the original (Michael was only like 13 when he cut his rendition, but that is a grown person's tune and Chaka interpreted it as such). That song and Aint Nobody from that same year caught my attention that she was a very outstanding singer.

It's on CD in Japan and every now and then one pops up on eBay for over 100 bucks.
I just wish she'd sing more jazz (ala the Giant Steps Medley). She's an amazing jazz singer and it seemb68s the only time I see her doing it is when she does the occasional PBS special.
