I'm worried about them both. Together they look like a herd of elephants. It's pretty worrisome.

I do too and even though it may be cold, what you said was so funny!
but I wouldn't want to be the person in front of them at an all-you-can eat buffet.
Sorry but..ahem. cough..snort..

It can affect singing and the mechanics thereof but not in all cases. Granted both their voices have changed but I think that may be more attributable to their age and not so much their weight.
When someone has been singing as long as they have, the singing actually changes the body. If you look at many singers who apply proper (or better) singing technique as both of these ladies do, their chest cavities are larger than those of the average person (or nasal singing pop princess). It's visible externally, look at any opera singerthey've all got it. -

I have to disagree with this. I don't really have time to go deeply into it but I'll just say that this statement alone is not fully accurate:
When someone has been singing as long as they have, the singing actually changes the body.
Singing does not change the body. The aging process does that but I'll elaborate later..maybe.

I read her autobiography and in it she mentions detoxing from drugs. She said she was on drugs from the early 70s through about 2000 or so. She's a prime example of why you should stay away from addictive substances: she said that many people ask her how it felt when Tell Me Something Good became a hit, or this or that song became a hit or when she won her first grammy. Her response: I don't remember. Now I guess she is battling food addiction: More socially acceptable but that can kill you too.

Thanks sweet1310452. I didn't know this about her. She is still a beautiful woman with an amazing voice. I sure hope she can get a handle on her food addiction because as you said, that can kill you too. I certainly wish her the best.
Peace.

aretha and chaka are my top two favorite female singers and i do worry that their weight could interfere with their health and longevity. i have never heard that you can be morbidly obese and still be healthy

Well said. Big or small, young or old, I have always had mad, mad love for this incredible woman. Her voice is over the top awesome and she is sexy as always.
She's like fine wine.she gets better with age.
