It's good to see so many Koreans respond to this message. I'm not Korean, if my points seem invalid to you please excuse me.
Obviously, Ms. Kim is no Jeon Ji Hyun or Kim Hee Sun - the typical "gorgeous girl" type Korean fans would die for. Kim's popularity is no match to these beauties for their constant appearances in TV commercials, TV series - the media that bring popularity to stars. Ms. Kim is kind of an odd case in Asian e5b4ntertainment, who doesn't rely on TV popularity to gain her stardom.
Fans over the world still applaud her legendary role in Swiri, some 8 years after the movie Kim's phenomenon hasn't died. This is the power of a star. Like how we remember Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, Tom Cruise in Top Gun..Kim's power is simply amazing. Yet, more non-Asians get to know and fall in love with this Swiri actress..whether it is simply physical attraction or not, Kim's popularity is going to rise as years go by. -

It's awesome that you guys are learning English all the way over there. : )
A lot of Lost stars weren't really famous before this. Most of them have been in few movies, but they're extremely talented. I think in time they'll all become famous and popular and everything.
As for YJ, I think she's pretty and she'll become more and more recognized once she's gotten a few more roles.
One geek to rule them all and in the darkness bind them!

Well, that's pretty weird I am no expert in k-dramas but the few ones i've seen were rubbish (the acting was worse than those softcore movies in midnight runs at TMC :)). YJ kim is great in lost; from my experience, I can hardly imagine any other korean actress as solid and professional as her (maybe that's the reason she isn't famous uh?)

I would have to agree that she isn't that famous in Korea. I'm Korean American, I'm from Seattle, with typical Korean parents who just live and die for those god-awful "duhramas" from Korea.
My parents didn't know who she was either. -

I beg to differ since people do remeber the movie shiri, yes maybe the younger generation of koreans probably might not know her considering that the talent pool in korea is very lacking with the same type of actor playing the same type of role with the same type of everything. she was in a big hit movie that perfromed well and is garning attention here in the states. from seeing korean television anytime an actor or entertainer is succesfull overseas it becomes newsworthy. she just doesnt get the attention that other people get i think.

I don't agree with the above Koreans.
Shiri was THE movie at the time it first came out, it was a huge hit in Korea.
Shiri is an entertaining film, and she is so good. Yunjin's potential was obvious from the word go.
So, no, Lost is not the only thing she has done, BUT there's little denying she's probably the best known111c Korean actress exactly because of Lost, at least in the non-Asian world.
And I admit that as a hardcore Yeong-ae Lee fan. (Just one more film please!) -

Just because I want to go along with this thread:
I'm also Korean! (lol) but I am too Americanized to really notice any asian celebrities besides the really big ones like Lucy Liu and.. .Jackie Chan! hahaha -

The show Lost is popular int he USA, Yunjin Kim, Isnt. Sure if you say 'that asian chick from lost' they'll go OH yeah, but ask and 99% of people who've seen the show and even fully recognize her, have no clue what her name is.
She ISNT famous in the USA. LOST IS. BIG BIG difference. As for being the most beautiful in korea then wellI feel sorry for you male koreans cause I'd hope there'd be at least someone a LITTLE hotter than she is, but fi you're all stuck with uglier ones, no wonder North Korea is always so pissed off. ALso explains why they eat house pets. -

Generations watched SHIRI in theatre may know who she is well because of shock SHIRI brought to Korea when the film was first released but the others may not since she didnt participate in musch film works after SHIRI. Younger generations who are interested in western shows in Korea, however, know her very well. I'm a senior student in an art highschool in Korea and my classmates know her and works she was in. But, when it comes to whole country, not much of younger generations are interested in those shows. By the way, lately a Korean film HARMONY, a film starring Yunjin Kim, was released. It made a box-office hit so I guess more people would know.
