Who had the biggest impact? Who is more influential?
I pick MJ- He revolutionised the music video.
- He self-penned the lyrics to a lot of his biggest hits.
- He crossed racial and ethnic barriers.
- Thriller has sold over 75 million copies worldwide, that's the combined sales of Madonna, Like a Virgin, True Blue and Like a Prayer.
- He appeals to men and women, boys and girls, straight and gay, black and white. Madonna mainly appeals to gay men and women.
- He's had an influence on artists from different genres of music (pop, dance, rock, blues, R&B, urban, soul, easy listening), many of whom are credible and influential in their own right. Madonna's influence doesn't stretch much further than manufactured pop stars like Katy Perry and Britney. I've hardly ever heard anyone of credibility name-check Madonna as someone they respect. I remember how divided the reaction was when The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced they were inducting her.
- He won eight Grammy Awards in one night. Madonna has only won nine5b4 in her entire career, none of them in any of the four major categories. MJ won Album and Record of the Year in 1984.
- Legendary costumes and dance moves.
- A great singer.
- Longevity - his first top 10 single was in 1969 (with The Jackson 5), his last in 2014.
