HE'S BACK IN BLACK: THE NINJA

Longtime readers of the site may know of my infatuation with the ninja. A few years back I begged for the return of the ninja to Hollywood movies, but I didnt expect my request to come to such literal fruition.
And yet, heres the most exciting news Ive read in months, news that makes me want to dig out those shuriken and nunchucks I bought from the back of Solder of Fortune magazine back in junior high: honorable master assassin Sho Kosugi will once again fill his pockets with smoke bombs and tetsubishi spikes for The Return of the Ninja.
I have to repeat that, for my own behalf: Sho Kosugi, starring in a new ninja movie.
The movie will be penned by Die Hard scribe Steven de Souza and produced by Kevin Foster, whos gathering over half the $35 million budget from Japanese investors. The story has Kosugi as the last ninja, seeking a suitable heir in America (and likely ignoring Michael Dudikoff). Its probably safe to assume that villains will be violently dismantled with exotic weaponry.
For those unfamiliar with the Cannon/Golan-Globus logo, Kosugi kicked off the ninja craze in the 80s with Enter the Ninja and brought quiet carnage to the most popular ninja flicks including Revenge of the Ninja, Ninja Terminator, Nine Deaths of the Ninja, and the unforgettable classic Ninja III: The Domination, as well as the the Lee Van Cleef ninja-student TV series The Master. He all but disappeared into shadow after battling sightless swordsman Rutger Hauer in the crap classic Blind Fury. -

Kosugi is THE man. Although he tragically decided to star in some real stinkers, I digress that there will always be a place for The Black Ninja in film. Many of us who grew up in the 80s know Kosugi well, and when I was a kid he was the best stufff on Earth. Excellent with a sword, he finally brought some sense to those often drab, unskilled Hollywood sword fights. And what's more .. HE DID IT AS A FRIGGIN' NINJA. Too cool, and I've missed him over the last decade.
BUT, you definitely have great news. Kosugi's aged a bit, but he's still got that Ninja look, with the narrow eyes, defined brows, and of course, his signature black mascara. 9 Deaths, Ninjas 1-3, and Pray for Death .. All classics in my books. Here's to Return of the Ninja, in hopes that it too will go down as a positive note in Kosugi filmography.
