In retrospect I am somewhat shocked that they chose Linda Lavin to play in the Title role of Alice. They could have used someone, even an unknown, who was pretty or mildly attractive. This broad was a complete dog! I know her character wasn't supposed to be glamorous, but they could have chosen someone a bit more appealing.

I couldn't stand Wentworth. I've turned Barney Miller off for that reason alone, and I love Barney Miller.

Agreed, it was a really stupid decision.
That's why they canceled the show and replaced her immediately, and why Linda Lavin has no jobs even today.

I just saw her in The Intern. Looks very good for 78. But everybody's right. Ellen Burstyn played Alice in the movie and she looked fantastic.
