I just want to know what idiots failed to recognize his performance in "Silence Of the Lambs" and give him a Best SupportingA Actor nod.
Excellent question! Like another previous poster said, the metamorphosis from Buffalo Bill to Captain Stottlemeyer is truly an example of an incredibly gifted actor.
AMAZING!

I was watching Shutter Island and I kept asking myself "where have I seen this guy before??" over and over again. I finally had to cross-reference his name in IMDB to get it I, too said "OH!! It's Buffalo Bill from TSOTL!"

my biggest complaint about the Oscars won by
Silence of the Lambs
is that as good a performance as Anthony Hopkins gave, he didn't deserve to win for Best Actor in a
Leading
Role
he only had roughly 20 minutes of screen-time
if Brian Cox hadn't had dropped out of the role, I wonder if he would've received the same recognition
Helena Bonham Carter was robbed -

Brian Cox was never offered the role in Silence. Different production team, different studio, etc and they were distancing themselves from Manhunter. As good as it is, it was a commercial failure. The studio that has made the Lector movies made Manhunter, Hannibal, Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising. After Manhunter did po5b4orly, they let MGM have Silence. Then took the series back after. So Cox wasn't even considered for the role of Lector.
