Larry was a good character actor who deserved a better career. He must have cringed to read some of those MASH scripts, knowing he had to make Frank Burns believeable! I know he had a lot of great moments but they saddled him with too many awful ones, especially near the end. Rest in peace, Larry.

I think that because of th111ce way Linville played the part of Frank Burns he ended up being the funniest character on the show. Everything that that guy did made me laugh. I can understand why he left the show I guess, I mean he and Margarate were together and then they broke up and she got married. There was really nothing left for his character, but I would take Frank over Charles anyday.

Linville said that Frank sort of stopped being funny and became more pathetic after Margaret got engaged. Then, Frank was pretty much on his own, getting kicked around. It wasn't as much fun as when he and Margaret were a team.
Other actors from the show all said how he was nothing like his character. In real life, he was supposedly one of the nicest guys you could meet. -

Charles was a much better character, but that has nothing to do with the actors. I actually love both, but Frank Burns wasn't growing and the last season he was on wasn't great. Linville was right to leave. Burns and Hot Lips were great together and when that ended, the solo act didn't work so well. And yes, Linville deserved so much more than he got. It's really great seeing him in other roles.
Charles was a better character- it seems maybe the writers learned something after losing a talent like Linville.
