There's no such things as a 'bad' American accent. America is a country of racial mix, so everyone has a hint of something. I can understand poor British accents and a poor Chinese accent, but America hardly has one set tone that everyone speaks. (think southern accents and western accents.)

This problem (bad American accents by foreign actors) could be solved by simply hiring AMERICAN actors to play AMERICAN roles. I don't understand the trend of hiring non-American actors (Hugh Laurie, Portia de Rossi, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Louise Lombard, and yes, even Poppy Montgomery, talented though she may be) to play American roles in American TV shows, movies, etc. Is there some sort of quota that needs to be filled? Or is there a massive shortage of American actors in need of employment? These people may be very talented and capable actors, but surely there are plenty of perfectly capable American actors who could more than adequately fill these roles, and who undoubtedly need the work as well.

Hey, we get Americans usurping our roles (think Brigitte Jones, Sliding Doors), so you can put up with it too.

but on the other hand i kinda understand what the xenophobe said. but i don't think you should hire american actors only. but why can't sofia be english?
anyway, i didn't notice she was from the UK, but maybe because i'm from austria and only notice accents, but not bad accents ;]

E1971 - Before telling the thousand "Limeys" in the American TV industry to go home (most of them probably live here anyway), kindly go and talk to your friendly local chain stores about the millions of jobs they outsource.
Hoangiuk - Please don't think for a minute that the average American thinks along the lines of E1971's post. He probably just wanted to begin an argument.

because its called acting you half wit! that's like saying you should only hire serial killers to play serial killers. at least she's not as bad as josh hartnett in blow dry or brad pitt in devils own. and you don't hear us going on about BRITISH actors for BRITISH roles do you?

I've always known she sounded funny but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. At times I thought she might be Eastern European or sometimes South African based on how she soundsit doesn't seem consistent to me at all either.

Her accent may not be as good as other British actors playing Americans (such as Dominic West and Idris Elba in The Wire) but it's not so bad so it immediately sounds fake.
It's also a lot better than Hugh Lawrie's in House in my opinion.
