I liked the movie. It was funny and ridiculous like some of the Spirit comics that I have read. I guess they could have changed some parts to make it better but overall I thought it was a fun time and it reminded me of the actual comics of it that I had read earlier.
I have to say, I think he would have a made an excellent Shadow because of his deep voice and mystery in the Spirit. But I still love the Alec Baldwin one. To me, if they decide to remake or add a sequel to it, it would take a lot to be even remotely as good. But I think Gabriel Macht would be good in that role. I love that movie. -

The movie was an absolute mess but Macht was great. The poor guy had nothing to work with but he STILL gave out the best performance in the movie. That's quite a feat since we had Samuel L. Jackson chewing the scenery every chance he got. This obviously was the breakout film for him but hopefully his chance will come. Also he's VERY handsome and in great shape.

By NO means is Macht a bad actor. He's a really GOOD actor. He had little direction in "The Spirit" and Miller made some really bad choices as far as tone, pacing and script were concerned. (I'm not going to get all over the dialogue, it's "gonzo Noir" and is supposed to be throw-back to movies like "White Heat" and the old classics. Of course a largely uneducated modern audience is going to think it's "cheesy;" they don't understand it and they've never been exposed to classic film, they don't have the attention span.) My problem was with how Miller pulled focus from his lead and let Sam Jackson dominate every scene The Octopus and The Spirit had together.
And, frankly, the character is not lame, it's a classic comic hero character. He's supposed to be Everyman who got a second chance to make a difference in the world. More than that, Miller never gelled the dynamic between Octopus and Spirit. There's supposed to be menace in that relationship and that never really came out. Even though the comics were a bit campy they were written in the 1940's, of course modern audiences would see them as somewhat campy, they have no point of reference the relationship between Octopus and The Spirit was adversarial and menacing. You were never really afraid of the Octopus, but you should have been, and the action should have been framed in a way that made you, as a viewer, believe that The Spirit was the one person who could deal with him. That never came across. I blame Miller and the producers, who are supposed to know what they're doing and should have ridden herd on Miller, but obviously didn't.
Before you start whining about how bad someone's acting is, maybe you should see more than one movie that they've been in. I suggest that you see "A Love Song for Bobby Long." I think you'll agree that Macht gave an astoundingly good performance in that film.
When you write fiction, you're always looking at acting talent to pattern different characters on, so you come to appreciate it when you see it. I've been making it a point to keep an eye out for Macht's movies because I've always believed that he had really apparent talent. I'm just hoping that all the crap he's had to swallow because of "The Spirit" won't derail his career. -

Absolutely!!!! He was also awesome in The Spirit considering he was doing what he was told to do and portraying the character as he was written to be.
Gabriel Macht is my top favorite actor!
He was freaking brilliant in A Love Song For Bobby Long! In fact, I came here to post a thread to see if anyone knows if it will be released to Blu-ray and then I saw that post! I couldn't believe it! He is a FANTASTIC actor. Just watch him in A Love Song For Bobby Long and American Outlaws, you'll see how great he is.
For me, Erica Durance's Lois Lane on
Smallville
is the BEST Lois Lane yet! -

I MUST totally disagree with FIlmi3578. Have you not seen him in A Love Song For Bobby Long??? Talk about a natural at acting, OMG, he is BRILLIANT in that movie!!!
Even in American Outlaws he was a total natural, not a forced line or mannerism came from him.
Same in Whiteout!
It's a shame the director made The Spirit like he did. Gabriel Macht would have shined instead of catching so much flack for it!
Cast Tom Welling & Erica Durance as Superman & Lois Lane in the new Superman movies! -

He is basically the reason I like the movie. He alone made me not hate the movie.
I mean, of course the movie has really hot actresses and the Sin City look is beautiful to look at but His acting is what made the movie for me.
I know the movie is silly and I know people hate it (And I can understand why) but he totally makes this for me. I loved him in the movie, I loved his costume and his hair, he was really awesome.
I'll look down, and whisper
