I heard she was having health problems and wanted to leave. She had a disease/condition that made her feel as if she had to urinate all the time. Not kidding. It sounds MOST unpleasant. I believe she finally got it under control with medication.

She left for three reasons
- She didn't like all the press attention & 'celebrity' that went along with being in Hollywood.
- She wasted to do movies (quote from Joan Collins)
- She didn't like the 'camp and glitzy' direction Dynasty had taken.

She also was tired of the role of Fallon and thought she'd taken it as far as it could go. (Guess she was kinda right there. The writers for the last three seasons had Samms playing her as a bland, wishy-washy little victim who got abducted by aliens for God's sake.)
Plus she was married at the time to a very wealthy Brazilian named Manuel Rojas who financing her "movie career". Their only project together was a flop called "Torchlight" about a yuppie couple whose perfect marriage is destroyed by his crack addiction. The marriage flopped shortly afterwards as well. -

The producers kept her role open for a year after she left, hoping that she would return. When she didn't, they hired Emma Samms (although Martin was asked to return several times even after Samms was hired).
Although Martin was excellent in the role, I can't blame Samms too much - the writers wrote the character completely differently once she took over. For the last season, the writers finally began to write the role as if Martin were playing her, but it was too late. -

Though I liked Emma Samms, she was not right to play fallon. Whoever decided to cast her as the new fallon made a huge mistake. The character was never the same once Pamela sue martin left. They should have cast somebody with the qualities as Pamela Sue Martin or just wrote the character off completly. Emma Samms was NO FALLON

Yes, Emma Samms was wrong for the role. Pamela Sue Martin was asked to return for season 9 (after the whole UFO thing that Emma Samms did), but she declined. I wanted her to return, and she would've been great in it!

Reportedly, Martin didn't like the juggernaut fame DYNASTY was bringing them, she didn't like how DYNASTY had gone from being a witty satire of the rich-and-famous to a lame celebration of the rich-and-famous (and indeed it had!) and she had hepatitis or something.
They asked her to come back two or three times, but she never did.
DYNASTY had quickly become a complete creative mess, and Martin no doubt understood that. (Although I do wish they'd had her back for Season 9, which had a new producer and was good).
Emma Samms is likeable, but she just wasn't Fallon. But the DYNASTY producers never seemed to learn from their mistakes, and kept recasting the grown Carrington children even though it never worked.
I just can't blame her.

Pamela Sue Martin is the only Fallon as far as I'm concerned, and Emma Samms really had an uphill battle from the start when she took over the role. It just wasn't the same and I think the many cast changes, along with inferior writing, changing of the times etc, ended up hurting
Dynasty
. Still, 9 years is not a bad run at all.
Pamela Sue Martin had great chemistry with John James and I appreciated that the writers reunited Fallon and Jeff before Pamela left. It would have been interesting if she had returned at some point.
