Why did she commit suicide?

According to the NY Times (1/16/78) she had been depressed for many years and had not appeared on the stage or in films for more than 15 years.
It was reported that she died on February 18th from an overdose of pills (the article did not state the type of pills)
For the last years of her life she worked as a typist and had her residuals as the only other source of income. She was 48 years old. -

I agreeno one will ever know why and she can't say for herself. And we have to give her some credit for working as a receptionist if, in fact, she couldn't find an acting jobto at least earn a living. Nothing wrong with that at all.

It shouldn't be assumed that she did what she did due to a failing career. There could have been a number of reasons she was depressed
Whether she had a serious mental illness probably really can't be determined if she wasn't on record about her personal life.

Well said. If she was upset about her career and chose to end her life over that, she had an awfully delayed reaction to it.
I found an old article in the Village Voice that was written after her death (Google newspaper archive is a God send). It said her career stalled because she didn't want to play the studio game. She wouldn't promote the films she was in and she wouldn't do photo shoots. She also wouldn't move to Los Angeles which I imagine limited her options. Her friends said she never missed Hollywood and didn't even talk about it.
She probably did have some sort of mental problems as a few people who worked with her said she was very sensitive and had a nervous breakdown. She took the end of her marriage to David Swift pretty hard too but I don't think her Hollywood career tanking had much to do with her choice. It may have played a part but it's not like she had to resort to being a receptionist to make ends meet. -

I hate how working as a receptionist is a bad thing. Not everyone is built for Hollywood success, she left it and kept productive, one of her scripts got accepted by a production company. Good on her. Depression is horrible however, it seems that she died alone.
