Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Maggie McNamara

At a time when Audrey Hepburn was the most sought-after face in the world, McNamara would have been a good compromise for those who couldn't have Hepburn. It could have sustained her as a star.

Her career didn't falter because she couldn't get parts. She supposedly wouldn't play the Hollywood game. She refused to do publicity for the few films she starred in and wouldn't move to Los Angeles. Otto Preminger said she had emotional problems due to the breakup of her marriage which presumably also interfered with her work.
After her death, her friends said that she never talked about her acting career and seemingly didn't miss acting or Hollywood. It seems she just walked away with no regrets.
She was cute and engaging in the two films I've seen her in - The Moon Is Blue and Three Coins In a Fountain - but I don't know if she could have sustained a career playing those kinds of parts. The only other part I saw her in was a 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone. She was 34/35 at the time but looked at least ten years older.
