I've been waiting for a Nightmare sequel since the 80's. Anyone remember the novelization of Nightmare on Elm Street? Back in the day I read what I remember to be the novelization of Nightmare 2 (much better than the movie btw). Anyway, there was also a short story that told how Freddy became who he is bundled with it. This was somewhat adapted (poorly) by Tobe Hooper in the Freddy's Nightmares tv series. I was a kid when I saw that and recall being disappointed. Now, in the right hands I believe that this backstory could a successful film (I hated Freddy's Dead. I dont feel that it was canon). Now i'm not sure if McNaughton would be perfect for the job, but he does have an eye. Let's hope that if there is some truth to this rumor, McNaughton does the job right. I'm a glass half full kinda guy, so I have hope.

I think it has the potential to be one of the best Nightmare films. I heard a rumour that it was to be called either "Elm Street: The First Kill" or "First Murder on Elm Street" which I like. I hated the Freddy's Nightmare Ramshackle that told the story very badly and had none of the characters from the actual films other than Freddy. Ludicrous. They would need to cast somebody to play the Thompsons, the Lantz, the Grey's etc, all of the people who Freddy comes back for revenge on. Its the only way it would work, if its faithful to the existing story.
I would love Wes Craven to consult on the script as well, he knows where the best of the material comes from.
And they need to leave out the stupid Dream Demon stuff from Freddy's Dead.

I think we're talking about the same thing. Freddy is described as a very evil man, not unlike the bad guy from Wolf Creek but a child murderer (and i'm sure he did other things too). The later movies made him out to be a likeable villian which I think is rediculous given his past. I hope this movie reminds people why he's so evil.

the 1st and 7th nightmare movies were the best because Wes Craven wrote and directed them both and I really hope he writes and directs this nightmare prequel but I doubted he will. It would just be really scary like the 1st and 7th. If you compare the 1st and 7th out of any of the nightmare films, you would have to say those were the scariest because it had no comedy to it, no silly one liners and it was just pure scary. Anyone else agree?

An5b4yone could direct a better Nightmare movie. If McNaughton does it, fantastic. The concept of Nightmare is brilliant but I'm yet to see it's potential fulfilled. Wes Craven really isn't that hot a director. His films are never really that scary - more camp than anything. Best is probably People under the stairs IMHO.

man me and my friend were just talking the other day of how insane it would be to have a freddy begining. with robert englund being all shady molesting kids then being burned alive only to respawn at the end. gimme 2 million dollars and i could make the best freddy movie youve ever seen. actually.. better make it 10..what? am i supposed to live off mac and cheese?

I hope John McNaughton will direct the new Freddy film. Nightmare: Beginning with the living Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) who kills children than parents burn him.
