          Don't know anything about Borgnine's "past relationships" or the like but remember Ethel Merman was well into her fifties when they were married. Even today not many women have a lot of romantic options at that age, even beautiful ones in Hollywood unless they want to be footing the bill for everything. Borgnine was not handsome but he was younger, an accomplished actor, and his own man, I can see why Ethel was flattered by his attention and could plunge into a romance. I suspect they were too alike in temperment and strong personalities though for the marriage to have possibly lasted any longer than it did.
