Apparently he met Kevin Smith when he (Mewes) was in the 7th grade and Kevin was in HS. Kev took a shine to the guy and even modeled the character of Jay after him in his debut film "Clerks." Ever since he's been able to come out of his drug benders to turn in great performances as basically himself on film. Word is that Kevin Smith started the Clerks 2 project as a result of a promise to Jason that if he got clean they would make another Clerks movie together.

Kevin knew OF Mewes, but they did not start hanging until Mewes was about 15, Kevin was 19.
Kevin has written about their lives together. It's called "me and my shadow" and it will make you laugh, break your heart, give you a lesson about friendship, and cheer for a young man with inner demons you can only know if you've lived it.
