Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Vera Miles

What sold me on Vera Miles playing the Kim Novak part in Vertigo were two things I saw her do on TV. There was an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents titled Revenge. I also saw her in a Twilight Zone episode called Mirror Image. In both of these shows she played characters that were very haunted for different reasons. Don't get me wrong. I loved Kim Novak in Vertigo. But I read that Hitchcock wanted Vera Miles for the part. I think she would've been very good. I wonder if Vera Miles ever regretted not starring in Vertigo.

My understanding, possibly from these threads and from the film "Hitchcock", is that Vera did not regret missing out on Vertigo. She said, "Hitch got his film, I got a son."
I think she was having a hard time with his obsession with her and the control he wanted to exert over her. She was grounded and wanted to have both a career and a personal life.
I would love to know what Vertigo would have been like with Vera, who was a better actress than Kim - by a long shot.

I got the distinct impression that he was obsessed with her.
I remember a scene in "Hitchcock" where he gets bad news, possibly his wife tells him she was attracted to someone else, and he goes on a rampage of sorts. He ends up at Vera's dressing room and when she answers the door, he says "Why did you leave me?"
We are supposed to think that he is talking to his wife. But he is talking to Vera and she has to tell him that she has a family and that is her priority.
He was known to become obsessed with his favorite stars, Madeleine Carrol, Grace Kelly, etc.

"Hitchcock" was quite good if that era's films and AF is of interest.
Good point about verification. It jibes with what I've read, mostly on this site. So, not a lot of veracity but not none. I think some of the folks on this site have read some.
AF's biography would have to be quite interesting.
