Well I probably first heard her voice through Janet Jackson's sample of "Big Yellow Taxi" on "Got Til Its Gone".
But I eventually picked up the "Blue" album after seeing it in a second-hand store. That's got to be one of the best decisions I ever made! So the first one I listened to properly would've been "All I Want". -

Coyote
, and it's remained one of my favourites ever since. I already owned
Blue
but had never listened to it, and then I saw the cover of
Hejira
in a record shop and was so struck by it that I bought it right away. I've never looked back.

I must have been All I Want.
I was 18 (10 years ago) and working at a record store when a colleague of mine put on the Blue record.
I remember thinking 'what and who is this'? This woman had me under some kind of spell. And now, 10 years later, she still had! -

My first Joni song I heard was Chelsea Morning as played by Fairport Convention. That led me to buy the Clouds album and after that had blown me away I bought Song To A Seagull and absolutely everything I could find ever since!! Even the compilations that had tracks I already had! I love her.

I heard about her through Mandy Moore who covered Help Me, so I sought out the original vocalist, but for some reason All I Want comes to mind as the first and not Help Me. But I heard that Janet Jackson song when i was a teenager so I guess that would be the first though I didnt know who it was at the time.

The first conscious memory I have of a Mitchell-penned tune was "Woman of Heart and Mind" as sung by Minnie Riperton when I was around 11. The lyrics captivated me. Fast-forward many, many decades: I am now a Joni devotee only missing about two albums and "Urge for Going."
Helga, I'm not mad at you; I'm mad at the dirt.
