How's this for clarity: I don't owe you an explanation for any thing I comment on here, clearly written or otherwise. If you don't like what someone writes, that is YOUR PROBLEM friend.

He DID clearly state that he was talking about a character. He said "Aunt Esther's ugliness". The actress wasn't named Esther. The character she was well-known for. But don't you feel like the grand champion of ugly people, jumping too quick to someone's defense. Let the world remain safe from lighthearted jokes!

Her character's stock in trade on the show was to be called "ugly" by Fred Sanford - it was a gag that always got audience laughs. The original poster simply was referring to that dynamic.

Anyone who's seen her early photographs knows she was quite the beauty in her younger years, and her later years too. As said before, it was mainly makeup and a character gimic, "Fred Sanford" was too old to have a mother in law to make fun of, so "Aunt Esther" filled the bill for the sitcom.
She was a classy beautiful lady, and she is missed. -

Her 'ugliness' was in how she presented herself and the God-awful clothes she wore. One dress she used to wear looked like it was made from a man's long johns.
But Bette Davis, Sophia Loren and Lucille Ball did not consider themselves to be beautiful. Beauty was all in how the woman carried herself.
I won't cite one example and get off topic, but another good one I used to watch was soap opera recasting or attempting introduce a new character and physical appearance was so emphasized, they failed to get a performer with any hint of personality. What is presented is one of the most physically bland persons ever to be seen. -

She was by no means a beauty, but she was hardly "ugly." Like others have said, her brash, confrontational way made her ugly to Fred. That one face she could make is hilarious.
But actually, I think even Fred didn't REALLY think she was ugly. Obviously, he and Esther had a history together, as she was his former sister-in-law. The whole "in-laws not getting along" is almost a clich. Besides, I'm thinking that Elizabeth was her baby sister, making her all the more protective.

If you watch entire series, you will see moments in which Esther and Fred actually do respectand even likeone another. They just have a funny way of showing it! -

Esther did say once looking at family pictures that Elizabeth was the prettiest of all her sisters, and Fred followed up with something about Elizabeth being the only one who had any looks.
Likewise, the niece who appeared was said to look like Elizabeth, and that's the closest we ever got to how Elizabeth appeared.
Fred and Esther had Lamont and Elizabeth in common, so they had that bond. When the fellow said he was Lamont's real father, all it took was a phone call to Esther to settle that matter (and boy, did it ever!)
