How come she never got her own show?

I know that she supposedly starred in that virtually phantom 'Sanford Arms' spin-off, but I'm surprised it ended there. After S&S made her popular for being a supporting actress, you would think that some television producer would have at least tried to give her some kind of starring vehicle of her ownor at the very least cast her as part of a sitcom ensemble. I think it would have been nice to have seen her on TV more predominately during the 1980s. She spent virtually her whole acting career as a random guest star, playing basically the same 'Aunt Esther'-like character over and over again.

Yeah, if you listen to her standup she essentially does herself and nothing else. She was a superb comic actress who knew how to do one character.
Still, you'd think she would have gotten a little bit more work. -

She was like Shirley Hemphill. Hollywood didn't know what to do with them.
She appeared on Love Boat with Sherman Hemsley, rather memorably, tho the 'plot' was somewhat weak, and was on the short-lived Detective School One Flight Up, which was kind of a spinoff from Barney Miller.
Shirley MacLaine, Lee Grant and othersb68 like them got all sorts of opportunities at shows on tv. Lawanda would have found an audience with no problem.
