Why does she always have to play stereotypical roles

I think it's a good thing that she gets to play herself in movies. The good thing is that there are roles for Indians out there, instead of having to pretend to be something else. On the contrary, it sucks when actors can't ever play their own race but have to pretend to be Italian or something to conform to white society. Also, she can't pass for anything else. There is no reason for non-white actors to also play roles where race is not discussed.

Sure she can. I hate it when people have to be so damn politically correct and make a big deal about so called racial lines. She oughta be able to play a lead role in a major film without her ethnicity ever being mentioned or refered to. -

Dude, let's be real, she could easlily play a latin American, middle eastern, Armenian, maybe even an Italian or Greek. The average american can scarcely tell the difference. You may be highly discerning because of your exposure or you may be South Asian yourself, but I'm afraid Joe Blow in the US dosn't make too many distinctions. And why not give her the lead in some disaster flick for example..without any reference to her race..and give her a blond american boyfriend? If I made movies I would. It's about time we got over thses stupid divisions.

DD dunsky maybe you live in redneck america where people can't discern different ethnicities because they have no minorities, but it's my experience that people in major american cities can broadly tell. I understand confusing armenian and persian maybe, but South Asians have a very distinct look and have a darker, different complexion from middle easterners. If you are chinese you can't pass for italian, and similarly, Archie looks Indian and wouldn't pass for anything else. Anyway, they never discussed her ethnicity in A good year, although for some reason they decided she should have an Indian accent.

And you're probably a Westerner. A lot of people here are really ignorant and can't differentiate between different ethnicities when it's actually quite obvious. I mean Naveen Andrews as an Iraqi? You've got to be kidding me?
Archie's features are too sharp and that nose makes it obvious where she's from. In reality, the only thing Archie can pass as (other than South Asian) is
maybe
Middle Eastern. -

not true she's played pakistanis in most of her films and passed for that. -

Yes we are westerners and can't tell. But if she can pass for us then why should she limit her horizons. If people are somehow offended at her playing diferent ethnicities, then that is just plain stupid. I have no respect for that. I am for blurring ethnic lines.

I don't really understand what the big deal is. I live in a very multicultural area and get mistaken for different ethnicities all the time (I am of Indian descent). It's not really that big of a deal. I have Middle Eastern friends who first thought I was also middle eastern and also had the same happen with some of my South American friends. I myself once mistook a Mexican girl I met as someone with an Indian background, and an Indian girl I met as Italian. There are facial feature and colouring amb7eciguities in many people across the globe, so don't assume that someone is ignorant because they are a Westerner. To me, sure Archie looks Indian, but I definitely think she can pull of other ethnicities, no problem.
Archie is a beautiful woman, and she is an actress. If she can pull off playing other ethnicities, then given the opportunity, she should be able to play those parts without other people crying about it.

I don't think it's the stereotype that bothers a lot of people, it's more or less to do with the lack of juicy roles for people of minorities. That's the genereal gist from my understanding on the subject matter.

As she is of Indian descent then that does mean she will get a lot of those roles.
I reckon she would be grateful, there are still a lot of producers, directors, casting agents who are happy to give Asian roles to white actors and darken them up a bit or are reluctant to cast non white actors in some films, just think back to the commotion of the 'alleged' casting practices in the new Hobbit film.

Why are minorities entitled to those roles if this is the U.S? Do Amercian actors get the bulk of juicy roles in foreign counties,or do the natives? If we want to be mathematical, shouldn't the roles correspond with the percentage of minorities? No, the U.S. is the place for giving,giving,giving..
