Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Édith Piaf

    Bean-head83 — 22 years ago(March 31, 2004 07:54 PM)

Has there been any films made about her life? I just read a couple bios of her online and her life was FASCINATING. I would be surprised if a film hasn't been made about her life.
Well, that's the freakiest thing I've ever seen

The only film I can think of is "Edith et Marcel", which is about her love affair with Marcel Cerdan. I think there is another one out there, but I can't think of the name. There are a also a couple of old documentaries about her life .. one called "La Vie En Rose" and another called "No Regrets". I wish there was more out there about her, I agree with her being Facinating..

One biopic is actually getting its shooting finished. It's a French biopic starring Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf, and Gerard Depardieu and many other great French actors. I'm really excited to see this movie and I hope it turns out to be good and successful!!

Re. biopics, here's what i posted in La Mme's forum :
There are a few "movies" already dealing with dith Piaf.
              -Only exploring her early years
              Guy Casaril's "Piaf" (1974)
              http://www.imdb.com/board/10071995/
with Brigitte Ariel in La Mme's role
Based on her half-sister Simone Berteau's absorbing book, was not a good film. Guy Casaril's direction -he had made "Les novices" starring Brigitte Bardot and Annie Girardot three years before- is anything but exciting. Only a small part of the book was transferred to the screen, which leaves the audience asking for a lot more.
-Pat Gem's play named "Piaf" too adapted on tv in 1984 with Jane Lapotaire in Piaf's shoes.
              http://www.imdb.com/board/10216972/
-In its own way, Claude Lelouch's "dith et Marcel" (Cerdan of course) with velyne Bouix plying Piaf and Marcel Cerdan jr. playing Marcel CerdanIt was pretty much a cr*p.
BUT NONE OF THOSE DID HER JUSTICE.
They weren't ambitious enough, none covered her whole story, her whole life, the actresses playing Piaf weren't necessarily well-chosen even if Jane Laportaire won a (small) award for her portrayal, and horrible for a movie on such a singer, the use of music and of her music especially in those films/plays/tv ovies seemed to suck etcetc
So it's almost as if La Mme was the first true biopic on Piaf. Let's hope it will do her justice.
              So then
GO SEE THIS WHEN IT COMES OUT! =>
It is NOT the "bande-annonce" Mme Fromage but a shortned version of the 10 minutes montage of extracts that were showed to promote the film a few months ago (minus its first 15 seconds because the guy who captured this forgot the beginningsadly) 😉
Here it is in direct link :
              http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xxl9x_la-mome
What i'm really satisfied whith was something i feared the most about That's another reason why the choice of Marion Cotillard was perfect : it's the Parigot slang used and the 30s accent that was mandatory in saying those words It seems she's succeeded (!). She's "gouailleuse"!
And here are a few vids of Marcel Cerdan to judge Jean-Pierre Martins ressemblance or lack of it depending on points of view :
              http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Marcel+Cerdan&search=Search
But anyway, Nicolas Cerdan, Marcel's grandson, who keeps Cerdan's very beautiful and complete official site (
              http://www.marcelcerdan.com/
) says he is very happy with the choice 😉
All the numerous pics of the movie available so far can be seen gathered here :
              http://www.cotillard.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=4986#4986
It will have its world premire at the Berlin Film Festival.

The film is done! Released [2007]. "Now Playing," The title is LA VIE EN ROSE.
Piaf is played by Marion Cotillard. The only 'name' cast member is Gerard Depardieu. New York Times review is good.
For details (cast, trailers, synopsis, links, etc.) go to the official web site [with the likeliest, easiest-to-remember name imaginable, of course!].

It's a dandy little red curtain preview.

See, you just had to wait four more years for a good one. 😉 Marion Cotillard's Oscar win was well deserved, and I'm glad to know it will encourage more people to see the film and learn about dith's life (as well as hear her music, of course). She'll never be forgotten.

I'm just on her board as there is a documentary on featuring her. Yes although I haven't been tempted to find out further about her, I too thought Marion played what was clearly a very troubled woman so well, and she did so deserve that Oscar. I notice as well both her husbands died within a month of each other in the same year.
