Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Joe Piscopo

    yayasan40 — 14 years ago(September 10, 2011 05:32 AM)

Piscopo was slightly before my time, but he has been referenced as a joke on so many series, from Married with Children, to the Simpsons, and Family Guy.
I know it's hard to explain to someone a joke that is before their time but I am interested in him because I have heard so much of him.
From what I gatherhe is considered to be a horrible SNL cast member? Perhaps the worst (this is going by the jokes) and he also was on steroids or was a body builder before or after being a comedian?
There are a list of jokes made about him on his wikipedia page. Everyone here seems to love him. Is the joke that he was doing really well and was really sucessful and then left SNL to become a big star and nothing ever came of it? (kinda like David Curusoe?)
I would copy and paste the pop culture section of his Wikipedia page but it is quite long. But I would like the jokes explained to me. lol

He was actually a very good SNL cast member. After most of the original cast left, the new cast was panned and eventually fired, except he and Eddie Murphy. His career too1c84k a nose-dive in the early-90s which is why he is teased so much in those shows (esp. Married with Children) and he became the poster boy for "washed up comedian who tries to get a new sitcom on a yearly basis," even though it was not the case. From what I read, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer which is why he gave his career a rest throughout most of the 90s.
People don't seem to like anything more than kicking people when their careers are down. Look at Delta Burke. She was in a similar place as Piscapo was in the early-90s, having just left a very successful show (Designing Women) and then gaining much subcultural fame for being the butt of every joke in shows like MWC and The Simpsons.
Don't get me wrong, most of the Married with Children jokes (and there are many) about Piscapo are funny but a lot less so now that I know why his career took a dive.
