2009 ACADEMY AWARDS ' IN MEMORIAM ' TRIBUTE
The just short of four-minute tribute video (3:42) contained only 38 faces this year.
The time frame for inclusion into the tribute video each year always follows a calendar which this time was - 1 February 2008 through 31 January 2009, however there was time to add JAMES WHITMORE into the mix as he departed the scene on 6 February while production of the video was still in its early stages.
Each year when there are questions as to why this or that celebrity is not shown there is usually a statement, very much like the following when BRAD RENFRO was excluded from the 2008 Academy Awards ' IN MEMORIAM ' Tribute, even though he died on 15 January 2008 -
" Unfortunately we cannot include everyone," said Leslie Unger, spokeswoman for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts5b4 and Sciences. " Our goal is to honor individuals who worked in the many professions and trades of the motion picture industry, not just actors."
Each year more than 100 names are proposed out of which always less than 45 to 50 appear on the Oscars telecast.
One does not necessarily need to be a member of the Academy, nor ever be nominated for an Academy Award, for consideration.
Here are just some of those missing names which were submitted, although not selected for 2009 -
EDIE ADAMS - ROBERT ARTHUR - HENRY BECKMAN - SAM BOTTOMS - GEORGE CARLIN - ARTHUR C. CLARKE - FRED CRANE - MEL FERRER - NEIL HEFTI - PETER KASTNER - MICHAEL KIDD - EARTHA KITT - HARVEY KORMAN - JOHN PHILLIP LAW - PERRY LOPEZ - BARRY MORSE - LOIS NETTLETON - ANITA PAGE - JOY PAGE - MICHAEL PATE - HOUSE PETERS JR - ROBERT PROSKY - ANN SAVAGE - MALVIN WALD - (24)
Throughout the showing of the 2009 production, QUEEN LATIFAH sang - " I'll Be Seeing You " - before the larger screen and smaller screens behind and around her.
Here are the names, in sequence, of all those who were featured in the 2009 ' IN MEMORIAM ' Tribute -

Absolutely disgraceful that he wasn't included. Disgraceful.
