Well what I know of the story is all from Joseph Kahn's twitter and formspring. Joseph Kahn is basically the most important and succesful Music Video director of the past 20 years. He happens to be part of the same production company that Brett Ratner is part of. This production company gives jobs like TV commercials and music videos to their roster of directors. Brett Ratner started his career directing music videos, and to this day still directs music videos and commercials, an easy gig to make some quick big bucks when he doesn't want to commit to the long commitment of a film.
Anyway, last year (I think it was), Joseph Kahn answered a series of questions saying how a well known 'douchebag' director actively tried to sabotage his career and get him fired. I had a theory that it was Brett Ratner as they are very much in the same field with the high budget TV spots and music videos. Joseph Kahn has also made several jokes about Brett Ratner on his twitter in the past 2 years. No with Brett Ratners new public controversy Joseph Kahn was very vocal about how Brett Ratner is a dick and should be fired from the Oscars and is getting what he deserves. The guy obviously HATES Brett Ratner. I looked, and low and behold, they have been employed by the same company (HSI) for like 10 years. So while Joseph Kahn was moving up and making awesome music videos and TV spots, even dabling in a feature film (Torque) (plus he has a new movie coming out next year: Detention), Brett Ratner saw him as a threat to him, as he missed out on big paying music videos and tv spots, so he tried to get him fired from HSI. -

I will add to this that in a podcast recorded in early 2012 it was revealed that Joseph Kahn was attached to direct Money Talks but was fired. Brett Ratner ended up directing that film. So Ratner must have gotten him fired.
I will also leave this here. It is someone's description of attending NYU film school and working with Brett Ratner:

Ratner also considered toxic now. No one with a brain is going to hire this guy simply from a financial standpoint.
He had a movie out (Tower Heist) and did the dumbest thing for producers and the studios. His movie got decent reviews, but all the bad publicity from his stupid actions killed its best chance for success.
It's not like he's talented anyway. He's easily replaceable. And since he sabotages his own films, no one can count on him to make money. -

This is from Joseph Kahn's Formspring:
Do you have any famous ENEMIES (you don't have to name them).
Yes. Years ago one famous douchebag director once tried to kill my career because he saw a threat. He was that petty. Went totally out of his way to beep with me - lost my manager, lawyer, production company, money, everything. But you can't really kill a Korean unless you chop the head off, so here I am more awesome than ever. Mortal Kombat beepHe has never outright said that it was Brett Ratner, it is my theory though as it seems obvious from that post and his tweets bashing Brett Ratner's work and attitude.

This man is a Crook . Check this out.
2000 made FAMILY MAN budget 60,000,000.00 his salary 5,000,000.00
2001 made RUSH HOUR budget 90,000,000.00 his salary 5,000,000.00
2002 made RED DRAGON budget 78,000,000.00 his salary 6,000,000.00
2006 made X MEN LAST STANDING budget 210,000,000.00 his salary 8,000,000.00
2008 RUSH HOUR budget 140,000,000.00 his salary 7,500,000.00
Is this man for real. Moulin Rouge in 2001 cost 52,000,000.00 to make. he spent 90,000,000.00 the same year for RUSH HOUR. There is something very wrong here.
