Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Ralph Richardson

TCM screened it tonight. Richardson was the quintenssential New York aristocrat and was absolutely stunning. I'd read that Basil Rathbone played the role on the Broadway stage but Sir Ralph owned the part.

Well you might say that Sir Ralph owned the part but the director wanted Robert Donat.

        Hi Jamal-Nazreddin,
Donat would have been fabulous too.

Huge fan of Sir Ralph, one of the realm's greatest actors but I would have like to have seen Donat have a go at the part as well.

Agree about Sir Ralph and would've loved what Donat would've done with the role as well.
Apparently Sir Ralph's technique intimidated Montgomery Clift who was a method actor Cant that man make any mistakes? he groaned after Richardson repeated a take with him for the thirtieth time in the same polished manner. I cannot will not do a scene the same way each time.' LMAO!
