Uses American terms and spellings in Harry Potter?

I noticed in the first few HP books she uses terms like dingbat for example which is an American term among others, yet she's British so why does she use American terms? I don't have a problem with it, I'm just wondering.

Dingbat is used in Australia as well, so maybe she was catering to a world wide reading populace.
