it's a strange interview, awkward to even watch (but definately "good T.V.", i guess..lol) and people are really divided on which one was the jerk. At one point Shandling says some interesting things about fame and getting sucked into it. Clearly he was directing his comments at Ricky.
Gervais did end up coming off badlybut if the two had been in synch, comedy-wise, he wouldn't have. Ricky was trying to get along - Shandling had nothing but disdain for him, and Ricky ended up looking like a fool.
It appeared that Shandling disliked him basically from the beginningI'm not really sure why. Ricky seems like a pretty harmless fellow, and he worships Shandlingor at least he did before this interview. LoL

Okay, I just watched the extras on Not Just the Best of the Larry Sanders Show and he acts exactly the same I think he is a little crazy now. Seriously, I am not trying to bash him. I think he is mentally ill. He just can't react with people anymore without seeming crazy and full of contempt.

I thought Ricky did his interview fine. I think it's just your own misunderstanding of Gervais which has led you to believe that he's some self-absorbed prick. He shows off a lot about his achievements, but in a joking way. A LOT of the time, he tries to balance it out by taking the piss out of himself. He ALWAYS takes the piss out of his lack of fashion, the fact that he's fat, the fact that he's pug-faced, etc., I think, as a sort of indicator that it's all a joke, and he's not being serious or arrogant or anything.
He does a lot of sucking up, but who wouldn't when meeting your idols/heroes? Maybe he wants to know what they think of his show, again, who wouldn't? They'd prefer a good opinion right? Jesus christ, so many famous people get shot down for such simple human emotions and feelings, when it's completely NORMAL! If you were good at basketball, and you saw Michael Jordan, naturally, you'd praise him, and you'd hope for him to praise you back, maybe even try to get him to, since it's one in a life time thing probably. You'd feel amazing.
I don't know if it's set up or not, or if Shandling is actually like that normally, and I don't really care. I am slightly annoyed at Shandling for the way he acted, but he has his reasons, so I'm not going to flame him or anything, but I can understand people getting angry with him because he's actually being rude. But flaming Gervais for these stupid reasons, I don't understand. -

Have to disagree with everyone in this thread. This was clearly a staged confrontation designed to look like there is friction between the two. Like Shandling even points out, Gervais is adept at the same type of humor Shandling likes creating uncomfortable, awkward, controversial, yet funny moments, much like the many encounters that Hank Kingsley or David Brent has in their respective shows.
These two comics are a lot more on the same page in this interview than anyone gives them credit for. Shandling acknowledges that Gervais tells Holocaust jokes in his standup bit, not because he is offended, but because he admires Gervais treading into such dangerous comedic territory. Shandling himself has done his own Hitler jokes over the years (one of the Larry Sanders episodes features a Hitler skit which offends Jason Alexander and of course Jason Alexander and Seinfeld had their own Hitler jokes). The point is that both Gervais and Shandling like to mine unconventional themes for humor.
Gervais also purportedly offends Shandling by pointing out that Shandling looks like Bingo, some ugly British cartoon character. In reality, they are just extending the joke from the Larry Sanders Show involving Larry's fears that his face looks puffy or his ass looks fat. One of the funniest Larry Sanders moments involves Dana Carvey giving an unflattering imitation of Larry, and Larry's offended reaction is priceless. This is the same thing.
The fact that Shandling didn't offer an annoyed Gervais a cup of coffee during the interview just confirms that this is all a joke on the viewer why else would Gervais' producers leave this footage in?
To me, this sometimes uncomfortable interview is just an example of the sense of humor that Shandling and Gervais share awakardness and insensitivity are funny. -

I must be one of the only on111ces who thought the interview was hilarious. To me it was obvious that Shandling was playing the part of a revered interviewee and both of them seemed to play off each other just fine. Even the awkward moments were them playing along. Honestly, every time Shandling said something "rude", I completely knew he was playing a very dry, often sarcastic persona. I never believed once that he was trying to be a jerk, and I never thought Gervais felt that way as he was often lobbing them back (as when he told Shandling he wanted coffee as well). I must be the only one that thought the interview was great.
