Then you're not paying attention or you don't know any better.

How about Jennifer Hudson or Whoopi Goldberg or Halle Berry. They have all won Oscars and did not play a maid. Yes, Octavia Spencer won the Oscar for her portrayal of a maid, but unlike Hattie McDaniel (who also one for playing a maid) Octavia showed a different perspective on maids during that time. Minny, Octavia's character, was not docile, subservient, nor did she live to please her employers and but them above herself. I think she is a great actress and deserved her award.

She was a maid during a time when black people didn't have rights. That's a subservient role.

Sorry but that's just ridiculous. By your logic any afro-american actor playing almost any character form the 17th century to the 19th century (and possibly up to the 50s or 60s) would be playing a subservient role.

They would be because that's how history was.
"Afro American"? lol. No one says that.

I don't need to. She played a black maid with poor English in the early 1960s in the deep South. If she went any lower she would have been a full out slave.

if she hadn't won you'd probably be COMPLAINING that she didn't win cause she is black.
Wrong. I would have been happy if she didn't win. Why would I be happy with a black woman winning an Oscar for playing a maid?

To bad cause Octavia seemed really happy. It was already pointed out that not all black oscar winners have played maids but of course complaining just makes us feel better.
Earlier I clarified my point and said negative stereotypes or subservient roles.
                                          Oscars
                                          Denzel Washington - Training Day

                                          Monique - Precious
                                          Octavia Spencer - The Help
Movies that received a lot of praise in recent years
                                          The Help
                                          Precious

There's a pattern here and I'm not the only black person to raise this issue.
