Keith Partridge Replacement?

Is there any truth that the producers of "The Partridge Family" considered replacing David Cassidy with Rick Springfield if that show had not been canceled after the fourth season? I heard they were going to send Keith to college and Springfield was going to play the part of an Australian exchange student. It would have been very convenient having an exchange student who sang, played guitar and wrote songs. It sounds a bit far fetched even for TV.

Hadn't heard anything about that. I know there was talk about replacing David Cassidy at one point but I didn't know they actually had people in mind. I thought it was just a general sort of idea?
My biggest problem with that scenario you described is, Rick's character would not have been a Partridge. The band was a family, so how could they keep the "Partridge Family" name if he wasn't one of them?

There have been family groups that included people who were not related. And the Partridge family were not a real group or a real family.
The band INXS began in 1977 as The Farriss Brothers. They consisted of three brothers plus three musicians who were not related. They changed their name to INXS in 1979.
The Beach Boys classic lineup consisted of the three Wilson brothers and their cousin Mike Love. I don't think anyone complained that guitar player Al Jardine was not related.
