I am not a regular viewer so please don't waste time telling me how oblivious I am - I thought he left at the end of 2014 yet I see segments related to contemporary events popping up all the time. I thought he not only left but was replaced.can someone fill me in?

@MagnoliaFan98 You are probably thinking of Colbert, he ended the Report at the end of 2014. Jon announced that he was leaving The Daily Show at the start of this year and will be departing on August 6th 2014. Stephen will take over Late Show September 8th.
And before you ask yes I was dropped in my head as a baby.

You might be thinking about when he temporarily left to direct his movie 'Rosewater'. John Oliver filled in while Stewart was filming for something like three months. Oliver had made such an impression as a guest host that after Stewart came back HBO offered him his own show.
