What she did in those 5 minutes with William Holden, going through a range of emotions and CONVEYING that to the audience was worth tons more than 1 hour of gray matter, than most actors have won their scenes for.
She had to squeeze everything into that short part, and be convincing and this was impressive and I was glued to the screen.
THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT. -

Piper Laurie had the best part, and she was amazing, nobody could've done Margaret White better than her. But it was a very "acted" performance. Beatrice Straight was the better actress, not just that year, but in general.

Network is in my top 3 movies of all time, however, I couldnt disagree more with the sentiments of this post There is nothing wrong with her performace, and it is quite good, but she should have not won the Oscar for thisYes, some will argue quality over quantity, but to me, it does not fit the bill with the rest of the nominees.

actually, Straight didn't win any of the other awards from film 1ebcsocieties, so whose to say who the 'best' was that year.
RE: time, it's not fair that supporting performances win in a lead category and the reverse -

Beatrice indeed turned her 5 minutes into something more than special. And while im ok with her win, i must say that Piper Laurie gave one of the greatest works ever in horror genre. Its such an iconic, disturbing, frightening and haunting work for ages. She succeeded not to be overshadowed by Sissy Spaceks PHENOMENAL(now thats one of the greatest acting ever on screen) performance.
