Jimmy Webb wrote MacArthur Park in the 60s (I'm not sure if he was on something when he wrote it) and it was originally a hit for Richard Harris in 1967. I don't know whether it was Donna or her producer's who decided it was a good idea that she record the son238g.

Actually, there IS a MacArthur Park in the United States.
It is a park in LA, named after general Douglas MacArthur.
It was built in 1880 as Westlake park, and changed its name after WW2.
Despite its fame as a song, the park is known for murder and drug dealingand some 'accidental & occasional' drownings.
Kinda scary, isn't it?

Jimmy Webb intended (as he stated in numerous interviews) for the words to MacArthur Park to speak as a metaphor for lost love.
"Someone left my cake out in the rain" meaning he took my heart and did not protect it.
"I'll never have that recipe again" meaning I'll never experience a love as true and intense as the first love.
"it took so long to bake it" meaning it took me a long time to trust him.

i think this song is her most underrated, personally. I thought (as a fan) it was an obvious metaphor. Not nessc. for love though.

I heard they started cleaning up Mac Arthur Park and is trying to make it more family friendly again. I think it's mentioned on the wiki article.

MacArthur Park" is a song by Jimmy Webb, originally composed as part of an intended cantata. The song was initially rejected by The Association. Richard Harris was the first to record it in 1968. The inspiration for "MacArthur Park" was the relationship and breakup between Webb and Susan Ronstadt, a cousin of singer Linda Ronstadt. MacArthur Park was where the two occasionally met for lunch and spent their most enjoyable times together.
