Clout comes from making studios billions of dollars over the years. He ain't ever gonna have it.

Exactly, he needs to play the game, do a Star Wars, an X-Men, a Marvel or a DC, make some money on it, do something
        small
that can turn a profit easily, do a sequel to the mercenary studio job and then do one for one of the other studios. Nolan has been lucky enough to have consistant hits, GDT hasn't.

          He was going to direct
          Harry Potter 3 & 6
          and
          The Hobbit trilogy
(back when they were only 2), he left HP to do Hellboy and Pacific Rim, and he abandoned The Hobbit once the problems with Tolkien state appeared, he's still credited with Story by because they used part of his scripts.
But yeah, he should play ball with the studios and make a tentpole flick, look at Shane Black, after
          Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
he was once again in limbo trying to get projects off the ground and nothing, then he does
          Iron Man 3
          and Blam!
          The Nice Guys
          gets grrenlighted and he's doing
          Predator 4
          .

            He was going
Yeah, that doesn't count. And whatever "credit" he got for The Hobbit hasn't translated well for his career as a director.

They also used his exact storyboards. When Perer Jackson came on board they kept the same shooting deadline so instead of going back into production to do things Peter Jacksons style, they used the storyboards that GDT prepared. Which is also why PJ opted to not use the large scale sets and costumes that made LOTR amazing and instead used an abundance of CGI, cuz money wasn't an problem for this production. TIME was.

                Maybe the third tintin movie?
Is a director attached to the King Kong prequel?

He should really be jumping on all fours to helm the major DC entries, Justice League, Superman stand alones, Green Latnern standalones, as Snyder is purged from the presence of anything related to DC.

I'll agree he do1c84esn't seem to get too much respect with a lot of his projects getting pulled or sidelined. How they took him away from Pacific Rim 2 still boggles my mind, Hellboy 3 is a little more understandable, he's such a marginalized character, and the films only really did well on home video
Mountains of Madness he abandoned because of Prometheus
Frankenstein has been attempted and failed.
I don't agree that he needs to beg to do some generic superhero film, or just a property at random to do, I'm sure he's doing fine with TV projects, and his films are made on a modest budget that turn a profit either at the box office or on home video.
We need directors like him that make unique films that have a voice, a point of view and are artistically made

Imo, the problem isn't with GDT (or any director really).
It's the studios looking to make a lot of money quickly with what they think is a "sure thing". A "sure thing" being what they think audiences want.
For example, after Twilight there was a flood of soft monster movies.
Comic book movies weren't really a huge thing until marvel made iron man and studios saw the earning potential. As a side note, Disney can put out whatever crap they want not because they have Avengers money.
I love GDT'S concepts and stories. But that's not what sudios want, so they'll back burner him.
