he wasn't a satanic philosopher. he was a cynic and a skeptic. he just believed most christians' idea of heaven was completely stupid based on the fact it included none of the joys of actual life

Which reminds me that he told his minister that he wanted to be cremated. "With your chances," he told Clemens, "I wouldn't worry."
In the end, he said he wished he'd been a better minister than a friend.
