Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Rudolph Valentino

I'm wondering about Valentino and Novarro fans.
Who is hotter? Rudolph Valentino or Ramon Novarro?
    Who was better as actor?

Very hard to say. They are both equally beautiful in their own way. Perhaps Valentino had more magnetism on the screen, whereas Novarro is more "cute", charming.

I just Googled that other actors picture, and him and Valentino kinda look a like. I haven't seen any of Novarro's films so I'll choose Rudy for the movies and acting. They're both good looking though!

I'd have to say that Novarro was more beautiful and Valentino was sexier. They were somewhat similar in their acting styles, but with Novarro we have a lot more to go on, as he had a much longer career and worked in sound. Novarro was pretty darned good, but Valentino had lots of talent, and we'll never know what his sound career would have been like.

Rudy was better looking, certainly sexier. But they were both fine actors. See Novarro in "Ben-Hur" (1925). He is incredible in that, and it remains one of the best Silent films ever made. It's up there with "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." But remember, Ramon is of Mexican desce7ecnt, while Rudy is Southern Italian, so they remain too different from each other for comaparison.

              Pinku,
The OP wasn't asking which ethnicity is "hotter," but which man. You're splitting hairs and over analyzing. As MEN, not Mexicans or Southern Italians or actors, each was "hot" in his own way, especially if one likes their men dark and uncircumcised. As the old adage goes, "beauty's in the eye of the beholder," so your opinion of which is hotter and obviously you're partial to Valentino is just as subjective as anyone else's. Personally, I find them to be the best of both worlds and would have greatly enjoyed a Rudy/Ramon Sandwich.
As far as which was a better actor, Navaro was generally better and not just because of his performance as Ben-Hur. The roles he played were more diverse and conveyed more range whereas Valentino was more or less a one trick pony.
And since you keep referring to them by their first names, did you personally know "Rudy" and "Ramon" or do you simply enjoy sounding like an expert on those you never knew?

From the hostile tone of your reply, you sound a bit sexually frustrated. might I suggest a trip down to Mexico? Maybe you can find yourself in an uncircumcised Mexican sandwich. Honestly, it could only improve your disposition and make you a happier person. You sound kind of bitter..

"An uncircumcised Mexican sandwich" - what a scream! Good one.
Come to think of it, that sounds pretty terrific!

Valentino and Novarro were actually good friends; Valentino specifically TURNED DOWN the part of
                    Ben-Hur
1908 because he worried it would all be downhill from there. He eagerly suggested Novarro for the part.

I thought Valentino and Novarro only met once. The only exception to this was a recollection from James Bacon who claimed that Novarro told him that he and Valentino were close. He hinted that they were intimate.
I think Valentino was the better actor and more handsome. I have nothing against Novarro, but he didn't really have the same magnetism and presence that Valentino had. As an actor, he wasn't as emotional as Valentino either.
Very few leading men of the 1920s had Valentino's appeal. Everyone was keen on making another Valentino, but there was only one. He wasn't matched by Novarro, John Gilbert, Antonio Moreno or Ricardo Cortez.
The only matinee idols of that era that were as magnetic as Valentino were John Barrymore, Douglas Fairbanks, Ronald Colman and William Boyd.

Ramon Novarro was exceptionally handsome but he didn’t have the charisma that Rudolph Valentino had. He doesn’t any real presence. On the other hand, Valentino was full of passion, emotion, and charisma. Valentino also possessed more sex appeal whereas Novarro came across as a bit more childlike.
None of the "Great Lovers" came close to matching Valentino.
