Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Rudolph Valentino

    mercury4 — 17 years ago(March 11, 2009 04:34 AM)

I saw him in the original Blood and Sand and I thought he gave one of his best performances in that. He's the best in the scenes when he has this tormented look on his face. He really looks like he's in anguish. I think actors today can really learn a lot from the silent actors. People think acting is all reciting lines and nothing else. Imagine if someone got nominated for an academy award one day without even speaking a line. That would really be something.
Sylvester Stallone was great at acting with his eyes. Some actors can just be great without even saying lines. DeNiro was great in Taxi Driver even when he wasn't speaking. Silent acting isn't easy.

worse: actors today think acting is shouting their lines..
I agree about Blood and Sand, but, to me, his best performance ever is in "the four horsemen of the apocalypse"

I only saw one scene of Four Horsemen. I saw the tango scene when he goes up and cuts in. He starts out winking at the girl and then knocks the guy out and starts dancing with her. He was great in the scene. I also thought he was great in both Sheik movies. In Son of the Sheik there's a scene he has with Vilma Banky where he's great. She's basically trying to tell him that she had nothing to do with him getting jumped. He tears open his shirt and shows her the whip marks on him. Then he tries his best to make her hate him. Then when he realizes she hates him he has this sly look on his face. He's going to rape her. She tries to get away, but looks outside the tent to see there are guards. She looks back at him and he smiles and shakes his head like he's saying, "There's no escape." He was a great silent actor and I can understand how he was such an icon. The way he carried himself on screen was unbelievable. Girls today are making this guy in Twilight out to be Valentino, but I don't even think he comes close to my paisan Rudy.

I agree! Another great moment in his acting was the crying he did in "The Eagle" he cries at 2 different scenes and both ways of crying are completely different! I had posted about this before(Topic title: He was a GOOD actor!):
"I especially LOVE how his sad crying face for his dying father(very light sentimental quiet look on his face with a touch of pain) is different than his sad crying face for when he is saying goodbye to Mascha right before his execution(totally torn up and unable to hold back the tears though you can see he is trying to be strong for her and hold them back!)! AMAZING!"
And I'll say this again: Actors today cry the same every time they have a crying scene! Rudy was able to cry 2 different ways in the same movie! And the guy in Twilight is just another flavor of the month! In about 5 years hardly anybody will remember him or Twilight!

Wow, you have a lot of guts posting in a Valentino forum with the name "Natacha Rambova", lol. That B***H almost ruined him5b4 in every way possible! Anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about Valentino! No disrespect to you, It's just that I read alot about Rudy and she was BAD for him. YOU seem nice though.

Thanks, but you shouldn't say things like "That B***H almost ruined him in every way possible! Anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about Valentino!" If you read outside of the Valentino bios, you'll find out that the studios ruined him and blamed Natacha. There are only 2 things she did that I don't agree with(but I think they were supposed to be a private married couple thing between them 2), and that's the faun pictures of Valentino and the slave bracelet. But like I said maybe both were a kinky private married thing meant to be only between them, that got out to the public. She may have been bad for him, but she really didn't ruin his career. I used to hate her myself, until I read other books(most Valentino books write un-true rumors about her and Valentino and state them as fact with no real evidence to back them up). It seems these biographers read the disgusting "Hollywood Babylon" and took every word as true! But anyways, all the famous actors who knew her said she was very nice and not at all this feminist controlling harpy. Anyways, if you want to talk more about this send me a message. 😄

I agree with you to a point. I have Michael Morris's "Madame Valentino" in my 'to read' pile and I was flipping through it the other night. According to him though the faun pictures were a personal thing she gladly circulated them among friends, proud of her art. I still dont ''blame'' her though. No one MADE Rudy do anything. He loved being bossed by her and theres nothing necessarily wrong with that. The wrongest part is t5b4hat Natacha gets the WRONG ''blame'' or ''credit'' depending how you look at it. Monsieur Beaucaire: come on Rudy had a hand in that it wasnt ALL Natacha. Sure it has her big flowery stamp on it but had it been a success they would have praised her. Instead she became the scape goat.
I think she doesnt get enough credit for the good things she did. Her costumes were amazing, and I hear her Egyptology career and collection was as well.

I agree. I think another one of his best performances was in "Cobra". I think that the story in Cobra also relates well with todays audiences because the plot was very identifiable to any generation as apposed to the "Sheik" or "The young Rajah".

He had the most adorable 'sad' faces (The Eagle comes to mind, Son of the Sheik when he realizes he left her, Four Horsemen when the monkey consules him, etc). Im sure he'd hate me for citing that.
As for acting ya'll overlook one of the greatest Valentino moments ever: when he argues with himself! In Son of the Sheik there is the scene in the tent right after he rapes Vilma and his father (also played by Valentino) comes in to yell at him. Valentino never really got along well with men and I think this performance gives some insight into thatfinger wagging and all I cant help wondering if hes channeling his own father. Its a fantastic scene and a great piece of acting as well (I always thought it'd be hard to act against something imaginary, it must take some skill especially in the pre computer days).

Personally, my favorite performance of Rudy was his role as Armand, in "Camille." He appeared to love Marguerite more than life itself. His worship of her was painful to see. That performance blew me away..i think it was the most romantic performance i have ever seen from a male actor.

I pretty much agree with your list, although I would put "Blood & Sand" much higher on that list. It's my personal favorite Valentino film, and also my favorite novel. I'm still dying to see "The Married Virgin" but the dvd costs around $100, and my pockets aren't that deep..
