IMO Ralph Waite as Slater in the mini series Roots was and amazingly gutsy performance.
I can't believe how shocking it must have been for folks to see him play such a ruthless maniac after they were used to seeing him as John Walton Sr.
Good casting + good decision by Ralph Waite to show his range as an actor. -

Ralph Waite made for a very hateful villain on "Roots." He was likewise perfectly nasty and unappealing as a mean bad guy in the funky and thrilling early 70's blaxploitation action item "Trouble Man."

He could show his temper on The Walton's and he did many times. He was a hard @$$ Daddy. I remember on time in the episode The Lie, he grabbed Ben and threw him around.Watching him he showed his angry, violent side. He was definately no Michael Landon.

What is more shocking then seeing Ralph Waite play this type of character? Seeing Lorne Green aka Ben Cartwright (sp?) play in the movie Roots also. I can name several actors that it is shocking to see in a "bad" role and hard to watch, Richard Thomas, Michael Landon, Ralph Waite, Pernelle Roberts (he played bad not so good guys on Gunsmoke) and the list goes on. Will Geer is there somewhere but if they are westerns you expect them to be bad and on the other side of the law.

Oh my! We must be watching completely different shows. As for Michael Landon, I'm assuming you are talking about his character Charles Ingalls and not the man himself, as we have no idea what his temperament was off the show. I saw Charles become violent far more times than I saw John Walton. They were both strict fathers, but in no way abusive. I just hope you aren't confusing the actor with his character as it seems.
