In my opinion Robert Walker Jr. gave the best guest performance of the original
Star Trek
series in the episode
Charlie X
. In it he's excellent and unforgettable.
I wish I had seen the episode on the night of its original broadcast. I'll bet I would not have been able to sleep, with Charlie's voice echoing in my head "I just want to staystaystay"; that memory still gives me chills when I think about it. RWJ has been one of my favorite actors ever since I first saw that episode in 1979.
I'm sad to find that he's retired from acting so early; there's no doubt that he truly has the chops. My best wishes go out to him, whatever he's doing these days.
Cheers to
Charlie X! -

He also put in an appearence on
The Big Valley
as R.G. Armstrong's mentally disturbed son, who shoots Heath and attempts to rape Audra. Something about Walker, I think, led to him being cast in roles where his character is somewhat creepy"Charlie X," as a prime example. He turned in an excellent performance, but, honestly, Charlie makes my skin crawl, as did his
Big Valley
guest role. His character in
The War Wagon
was less creepy, and5b4 more genuinely sympathetic, as was a spot he did on
Bonanza
.
I agree with riverian, it's a shame he's retired. He had some serious talent, and it's an equal shame he never got the chance to expand on it.

It's a hard country, kid.
