Along with being quite a good bass player, waters is a pretty good lead guitar player and an absolutely outstanding acoustic guitar player.

        Frankie Puke — 19 years ago(August 20, 2006 02:43 PM)

I think it can best be said that Roger's a rhythm guitarist who plays bass. He's played acoustic guitar longer than he's played bass, originally playing lead in early version of the band that would become Pink Floyd. According to Nick Mason, the reason Roger switched to bass was because he didn't own an electric gub68itar, and refused to put money towards one (bass guitars are typically cheaper.) His bass playing on early Pink Floyd records to me sound like he's the equivilent of a rhythm guitartist in the band, and even though David Gilmour is thought of as the more "competent" bass player (David played all the fretless part because Roger can't), Roger's done some interesting stuff on the four-string as well. Muting strings for the ticking sound in the Time intro, playing with a bow on The Scarecrow, the Money bassline of course, those weird "chicken" noises on Interstellar Overdrive (yes, that's Roger's bass.)
Roger's quite adept as a proper rhythm guitarist as well. Great acoustic player, even though we hear more of this in his solo years than on Pink Floyd albums. He doesn't play electric all that often, but he's got a good rhythm guitar method when he does. In fact, one of the reasons David played bass on Pink Floyd songs was sometimes because Roger wanted to play rhythm instead (Sheep is one of these cases.) His electric rhythm guitar playing can be heard on Sheep, Pigs (Three Different Ones), Shine On pt. 8, Don't Leave Me Now (allegedly), live versions of The Bravery of Being Out of Range, and probably other parts I'm not familiar with. Never heard what his lead guitar sounds like, and I think it would be interesting to hear Roger play a guitar solo himself sometime.
        Your sutpid!
        RIP Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett

          You're right except for;
He didnt even play rythm on Bravery live, the guitar wasn't even plugged in. There must of been a tape or something with recording rythm parts that he was playing. He's known for doing that nowadays, EX: Vocal tape used on the current DSOTM tour.

I'm 99.9 % sure that, during the In the Flesh tour, at least in Irvine, CA, the climax / final solo of Comfortably Numb was a long and vicious lead guitar duel between Waters and either Andy or Snowy. I remember being completely blown away, and thinking that Wateb68rs just played lead way better than Dave ever has.
Now, there is a chance I am wrong, and it was Andy and Snowy, because I was incredibly high. But I'm almost positive it was Waters, and I can still see it when I close my eyes, them trading awesome riffs back and forth.

I saw the shows in Australia and the duel was between Snowy and Doyle Bramhall, Waters played bass and Andy played acoustic or rhythm.

Roger Waters played electric guitar on the song "Sheep" from "Animals" and acoustic guitar on several recordings such as "Pigs on the Wing 1 & 2" also from Animals, "Southampton Dock" from "The Final Cut" and on "Mother" from The Wall.

He's a brilliant bass player, Roger told Guitar World, that David was always telling him he couldn't play (you know how "nice" Dave is), and when Roger shared this with Eric Clapton while they played together, he just answered "Is he beep crazy?"
Dave's flock keep praising how Gilmour played the fretless part in "Hey You", big deal.

Some of Dave's brainwashed flock I've encountered actually think Dave did most of the bass playing on the albums.
It makes me think none of them were paying attention while watching the Live at Pompeii film.

he is far from "brilliant" on the bass!
FLEA & PINO PALLADINO are BRILLIANT on the bass.not Roger. Hes mediocre at best.BUT he makes it simple and kind of got his own "style" (Thick fat picked notes) I Like Rogers bass playing a lot. Floyd would not have been the same without it.
And by the way..Did you know Wright used to tune Rogers bass? LOL! And yes.im not a "brainwashed" Gilmour fanatic! just factsRead a little on the history and stories about the Floyds and youll see.
just one more noteits the producer and the sound-mixer of DSOTM who claims it. Funny!

I have seen Roger Waters play six times on two tours. I caught him on both legs of the In The Flesh tour where there were some song additions. In all six times, in all the footage I've seen of Floyd, I have never seen nor heard Roger Waters playing lead guitar. Sure he can play acoustic on Mother and Pigs on the Wing, but both are similar and pretty basic in the rhythm department.
I have heard some old bootlegs where Roger gets a little funky, but no, he is nothing special at playing bass. It's my belief that Gilmour played bass on those tracks because Roger had no interest in playing anything inventive anymore. He was too concerned with the lyrics to care.

If you watch the pre directors cut of the concert movie LIVE IN POMPEII you can see him playing the bass to ECLIPSE and it's as if with the bass he is conducting an orchestra. His bass is what is behind the classic Floyd. Not just the notes, but the construction. The fact he wrote most of the songs, co-wrote many others, and almost all the lyrics. That bass is more than an instrument.
