It's his body of work and his career, so he has every right to do so. I just don't understand why it he chooses to ignore pieces of work that are just a creative/interesting as his "popular/classic" pieces.

Well he did play Set the Controls on his recent Darkside and In the Flesh tours. Other than that though, yeah he pretty much ignores it. I think it would be killer if he busted out One of These Days! Grantchester Meadows would be nice too.

Well he is a bit of a narcissist and egomaniac. So I would imagine he much prefers the stuff for which he was the driving creative force.
But honestly, I like some of the earlier Syd Barrett driven Pink Floyd material, but it doesn't compare to the best of the Water's era stuff at all. -

Personally, I think the band was much better before he took over completely. Maybe conceptual5b4ly it was better after, but musically no. Animals is exciting enough, but Gilmour wrote the music for 17 minutes of the 42 minute album too (along with many guitar solos Gilmour wrote for Waters other pieces on the album), but the Wall and especially the Final Cut lag like crazy and are often boring.
Also though, Waters might enjoy performing stuff he can actually sing, and most songs he wrote from '68 to '75 were sung by Gilmour, and many were probably much too rangey for his voice. -

I agree about the Final Cut, but disagree about The Wall
But the issue here is the stuff BEFORE Waters took over. I think everybody would agree that the Waters and Gilmour, and to a lesser extent Wrigth and Mason, collaborative stuff is better than the rest. -

Yeah, the collaborative stuff was some of their classic material, and their best.
Unfortunately for Waters however, most of the material, collaborative or not, was sang by David Gilmour, and the instrumentals would be lacking with Waters on bass only, and none of Gilmour's brilliant guitar work, and Wright's keyboards. -

There's no problem with his guitars or keyboards, he has a great band. As far as what you said earlier about how he can't sing those songs, if he can get with his army of backup singers and do "Shine On" and stuff like that surely he could do "Granchester Meadows" or whatever others were talking about. "Echoes" doesn't even have vocals, "One of These Days" and "Careful with that Axe" natch. But maybe he'll bust out with some of that on the next tour. I happen to prefer the early stuff too, but it's so far removed from where he is now. Whereas "The Wall" was very much in the moment in 2010, so I'm happy seeing him do something he still believes in.

"5b4Echoes" actually does have quite a bit of vocals, all sung by Gilmour and Wright. Gilmour actually performed the whole 23+ minute live version on his most recent tour, and it takes up a huge chunk of the second disc of his live album "Live In Gdansk". Also, anyone needing their pre-"Dark Side" live fix need look no further than the stuff Gilmour has been doing for the past decade or soan unplugged style DVD which features Syd Barrett's solo "Terrapin" and Floyd's "Fat Old Sun"; a live DVD featuring "WotsUh The Deal", "Echoes", "Fat Old Sun", a live album with "Astronomy Domine". There's even a radio performance Gilmour did of Barrett's "Here We Go".
I think Gilmour spent so many years performing "the hits" on the last two Floyd tours that he was ready to explore the earlier catalog. Waters, for his part, wrote most of the later stuff, so it makes sense that you perform the stuff you wrote, as you then (when you make live recordings) might not have to share as many royalties, I'm guessing. -

I've seen him do "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" like another poster said. Actually he did a really awesome version of it at the Shoreline when I saw him in like 1999 or 2000. But he's not that into the early material apparently. Yeah it would be cool to see him and his band bust out some "Echoes" for sure.
