But if Sony Classics moved her up from Supporting to Lead, it would automatically jeopardize her chances at the nomination.
Jacki isn't as well known here in America as she is back in Australia and the Actress race is highly competitive this year with Annette Bening, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman, Lesley Manville (another SPC release), Jennifer Lawrence and all of them.
Right now, with Sony's current promoting of the film - the screeners and the t-shirts with Jacki's face on it - no clear frontrunner for the big time and Jacki's current sweep of the critics' awards, it's best for her to stay in Supporting and, perhaps, pull off a surprise win.

I'm aware it all comes down to campaigning and stuff but seriously anyone who see the film must be wowed by it. I just think she's incredible in this film! And thank god she made a nice acceptance speech during the AFI telecast.. was that not the most boring thing ever telecast? Christ almighty, if you're happy people let your faces know Joel Edgerton looked like it was a hassle to walk up the stairs? It's not cool to not care people

She's looking like a dead cert now for an oscar nom more than two months after I started this board. I couldn't be more thrilled. I think that is just miraculous for an aussie to be nominated in an aussie film.I can only think of Geoffrey Rush in Shine as the only other time it has happened. She thoroughly deserves it.
Next question is, can she win it? Just how good is Melissa Leo in 'The Fighter'? Looks like she also plays a rough character.

Looks like I jumped the gun. Jacki was snubbed by the sag noms which is not good news at all. .especially if you consider that hailee steinfeld for true grit didn't qualify in the globes as best supporting and mila kunis has now snuck into both the globes and the sags.which might bump jacki out. The other 3, namely Melissa Leo, Helena Bonham-Carter, Amy Adams, seem to total locks. That would be horrible, esp. considering how obvious mila kunis' performance is playing a psychotic anorexic lesbian ballet dancer(too obvious) compared to jacki's australian accented nuances but then again we are talking about the academy after all!!!!
All fingers crossed -

I wouldn't count Jacki out just yet.
There have been several actors and actresses who were nominated for the Oscar who failed to get a SAG nomination (even Andrew Garfield didn't get a Supporting Actor nomination for The Social Network) and Hailee Steinfeld's placement in Supporting when she is clearly the lead of the film could have some voters calling category fraud.

I hope the Academy remedies the Hailee Steinfeld joke. I saw True Grit and while Hailee was indeed stellar in her role, she was in NO WAY supporting. In fact, she was the leading actress and she was in every scene from start to finish (until the closing scenes when her character was older). EVERYONE ELSE WAS SUPPORTING TO HER. True Grit was HER story, not anyone else's, and it amazes me how she has been racking up all these awards in the "supporting" categories in other critics circles.
It's incredible how the people behind True Grit have gotten away with this so far - and not only that, but critics circles are actually buying it and legitimately praising her performance in the supporting category to boot. Melissa Leo and Jacki Weaver are true supporting actresses, it would be a damn shame if either of them got screwed over for Hailee.
I'm just afraid with Jacki being shut out of the SAGS, Melissa Leo might win and really build momentum leading up to the Oscars, an advantage that Jacki won't have. -

Agreed. If the kid is that good (and she must be) nominate her in the right category. This idea that she's too young/inexperienced to go lead is crazy. -

The kid is good, I'm not sure if she's good enough to squeeze any of the other leading actress front runners out of the category, but in no way should she be in SUPPORTING. And if the Academy allows this, I will be flabbergasted.

I have a feeling that Hailee Steinfeld may do just that. Portman, Bening, Kidman, and Lawrence are ABSOLUTE locks. The fifth slot has gone all over the place, and this is beginning to look exactly like Keisha Castle-Hughes a few years ago for Whale Rider. Campaigned heavily in supporting, missed some precursors, and then pops up in lead.
At any rate, I think that solid2000ifies the Supporting category as Leo, Adams, Kunis, Carter, and Weaver. Weaver's NBR and LAFCA wins put her VERY firmly in the race. If I ran the world, she'd win in a land slide.
I'm also glad they interviewed her tonight on the Critic's Choice red carpet! She needs every bit of publicity she can get. I hope the Globes do wonders for her. She'll need it since she won't be at SAG. -

I agree with everything
I really hope Steinfeld slips into Best Actress (rightfully so/otherwise its category fraud) and give Weaver a solidified chance at a nomination for Supporting Actress.

I really think its the nominations that count, if she gets an Oscar nomination out of this, it will be awesome.

sorry can i also whinge about mila kunis' performance being really not that impressive.
Think the whole hailee stenfield issue is political. She is apparently incredible and deserves to be nominated but is probably going to be shut out of a very strong best actress category(You have all forgotten michelle williams). So therefore the voters will want to recognise her in the supporting category (remember nicole kidman getting an actress award and julianne moore getting supporting nomination even though julianne had more screentime than nicole)
So political!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -

Well everyone it's 3 months now since I started this board..all I can say is may luck/God/destiny/fate be with Jacki. She will need it all if she's gonna triumph over the politics especially regarding mila kunis and hailee stenfield
Here goes
